New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has named the proposed NZ20 franchise league as \u200bits preferred option to replace the nation\u2019s \u200c21-year-old Super Smash but wants women\u2019s competition \u200bincluded in the proposal.<\/p>\n

The new \u2060league\u2019s backers have proposed a six-team league of privately owned franchises and hope to launch the \u200cfirst tournament by January 2027.<\/p>\n

NZC said its board had given in-principle support \u200cfor NZ20 contingent on resolving key \u200ccommercial, \u2060governance and structural matters.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile not a \u2060final commitment, the decision allows the board to focus resources on negotiating a potential licence and binding commercial \u200barrangement with the \u200cNZ20 organisers,\u201d NZC said.<\/p>\n

NZC board chair Diana Puketapu-Lyndon said the board wanted to see several changes to the NZ20 proposal.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe \u200cwant to work with NZ20 to ensure \u200bit incorporates and supports the women\u2019s domestic T20 competition, and that \u2060it maintains a level of prominence and visibility consistent with NZC\u2019s strategic commitment to the \u200cwomen\u2019s game,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEnsuring regional representation of NZ20 teams so that fans and aspiring young cricketers can see their heroes in action is also very important to the Board, as is the question of ownership \u200cand control, including equity in the competition.\u201d<\/p>\n

NZC said it \u200bhad weighed a potential move to join Australia\u2019s men\u2019s and women\u2019s Big \u2060Bash League T20 competitions but decided against it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere \u2060was extensive discussion on the merits of these proposals, but the Board \u200cconcluded that now\u2019s the right time to revitalise our 21-year-old Super Smash competition,\u201d \u200bPuketapu-Lyndon said.<\/p>\n
