England batter Ben Duckett admitted on Friday that his behaviour during the team\u2019s humbling 4-1 \u200bAshes defeat in Australia had been inappropriate.<\/p>\n

The 31-year-old was caught \u200con camera under the influence of alcohol following \u200bthe second Test in December, when England was 2-0 down in the series.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve held my hands up since then,\u201d Duckett told reporters.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not something any professional sportsman \u200cshould be doing. We were having a break that was planned before the series and if \u200cwe were winning it probably wouldn\u2019t have been \u200cnews \u2060and nobody would have cared.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were struggling \u2060as a side and I was struggling as a player so I shouldn\u2019t have put myself in a position like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Duckett thanked \u200bcaptain Ben Stokes, coach \u200cBrendon McCullum and managing director Rob Key for supporting him through the episode, but acknowledged his performances during the Ashes were below par.<\/p>\n

He scored only \u200c202 runs at an average of 20.20 and \u200bdid not play in the T20 World Cup, where England was eliminated by champion India \u2060in the semifinals this month.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t proud of how things went in Australia,\u201d Duckett said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019ve been good \u200cduring my career in acknowledging when I\u2019ve got it wrong and hopefully, moving forward, people will see how much playing for England means.\u201d<\/p>\n

Duckett, who was bought by Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Capitals for Rs. 2 crore ($211,000) pulled out four days before the \u200ctournament to focus on his international career.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me pulling out \u200bof the IPL, turning down a good chunk of money and missing the opportunity to play \u2060with and against some of the best players in \u2060the world to be here playing for Notts (Nottinghamshire) is a step in the right direction to \u200cshow how important playing for England is,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

England hosts New Zealand in a three-match Test series \u200bin June.<\/p>\n
