We were just 320 runs ahead, and there were still 75 overs left. If we could not get them out, they would get that total,” Ganguly said.

“Suddenly, an attendant entered the dressing room with a chit. It was for me. It read: ‘What’s happening? Why are you not declaring the innings? The spectators are getting impatient’. That was from my father, who was watching the match from the gallery. I told the attendant to go and tell him that I was playing, not him,” Ganguly said, adding, “After an hour, I told John, let’s take the risk and we declared the innings.

“Even at Lunch, Steve Waugh was batting and I was still not sure about a win. But we got Steve after Tea, then Venky (Raju) got Mark Waugh, and then I brought Sachin Tendulkar in. He got a couple of wickets and that’s when we started believing that we could win.”

Ganguly also recollected the incident when he made Steve wait at the toss. “I was under pressure, so I forgot to wear the blazer at the toss, and Steve had to wait. I looked at his expression and he was clearly not happy. Later, we used it as a strategy,” Ganguly said, adding that back then he did not know that his team would create history.

“The name of the book is apt.
