Children remain excited, adults enjoy the views and good food along the way. But if the car breaks down midway, all the fun gets ruined. Engine overheats in summer, brake failure on hilly roads or tire puncture on the middle of the road. These small mistakes can become big problems. Especially in a country like India where roads are diverse, weather is unpredictable and service centers are not available everywhere, advance preparation is very important.

Safety is paramount when traveling with family. There should not be any kind of tension while going out with children and elderly people. Therefore, 1-2 days before starting the trip or on the morning of departure, definitely check some basic but important things of the car. This checking takes only 15-20 minutes but gives mental peace on the way. If things like engine oil, coolant, tyres, brakes and battery are correct then the chances of breakdown are reduced to a great extent. Let us know what preparations should be made before going on a long trip.

1. Check tire and spare tire

The tire has direct contact with the road of the car. Check the pressure of all four tires (as per the PSI given on the door of the car) before a long drive. Tread depth should be at least 3-4 mm. No cuts, bulges or uneven wear. The most important spare tire (stepney) should also be of full pressure and carry tools like jack, spanner. Punctures are common on Indian roads, so do not ignore these checks. Correct tire pressure also increases fuel efficiency and improves handling.

2. Checking Engine Oil and Other Fluids

Engine oil lubricates the engine and protects it from overheating. Check level with dipstick. Must be between MIN and MAX. The oil should not be thick or black. Also check the coolant level, this becomes more important especially in summer. Top up the brake fluid and washer fluid as well. Low fluids can cause engine damage or affect braking. If the trip is long, it is better to change the old oil.

3. Checking the brake system

Brakes are most important for safety. Check brake pad thickness, brake fluid level and brake response. If there is a noise while applying brakes or the car is leaning to one side, then immediately consult a mechanic. There may be a need to apply brakes suddenly on hilly roads or highways. Proper breaks keep your family safe.

4. Battery and Electrical System

Old or weak battery does not allow the vehicle to start midway. Check that the battery terminals are clean and tight and free of rust. Check headlights, brake lights, indicators and horn. The danger increases if the lights do not work while driving at night or in the rain. If the battery is 3-4 years old, get it tested before the trip.

5. Cooling system and other important checks

Check that there are no leaks or cracks in the radiator, hoses and belts. The air conditioner should work well, because traveling with family in summer is difficult. Also check the windshield wiper blades. It is important to see clearly in the rain. Apart from these 5 checking, carry car documents (insurance, RC, PUC), first aid kit, water, snacks, torch, jumper cables and road side assistance number. These small preparations before setting out on a trip with the family will make the journey memorable and stress-free.

Source link

Going on a long drive with family is an exciting experience for everyone.
