Chennai Super Kings secured an eight-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday night, completing its first league double over its long-time rival since 2023. Chasing 160, the home side approached the target with a clarity that contrasted with MI\u2019s drift through the middle overs.<\/p>\n

The pursuit was set up early. Despite the early loss of Sanju Samson, the host side refused to retreat into caution. Ruturaj Gaikwad, measured but assertive, and Urvil Patel injected urgency, targeting both Trent Boult and Krish Bhagat. Gaikwad\u2019s 17-run over off Boult tilted the PowerPlay, and the 49-run second-wicket stand, compiled in 22 balls, ensured Chennai was always ahead of the asking rate. At 62 for 2 after six overs, the chase had already been framed on Chennai\u2019s terms.<\/p>\n

Urvil\u2019s dismissal for a 12-ball 24, dragging on in pursuit of one stroke too many, did little to alter the tempo. Kartik Sharma, introduced as the Impact Player, resisted excess and allowed Gaikwad to dictate, who brought up his second consecutive fifty, this time off 34 deliveries. If that innings ensured the chase never veered off course, Kartik\u2019s complemented it by removing any lingering doubt, his maiden fifty off 39 balls turning control into inevitability as Chennai closed the game out with 11 balls to spare.<\/p>\n

Mumbai Indians\u2019 innings, by contrast, unravelled not in a moment but across phases. There was an early thrust after Hardik Pandya won the toss and chose to bat. Ryan Rickelton\u2019s assault, including successive sixes off Mukesh Choudhary, briefly disrupted Chennai\u2019s control. Yet from 57 for 1 at the end of the PowerPlay, the innings began to narrow with the back 10 overs yielding just 69 runs for five wickets.<\/p>\n

That squeeze was built on specific, repeatable plans. Noor Ahmad\u2019s removal of Rickelton, with a quicker, flatter ball that rushed the sweep, marked the shift. Suryakumar Yadav then threatened to prise it open. On 21 off 11, he looked set to disrupt the pattern, but Chennai leaned into premeditation. The field for Ramakrishna Ghosh was set deep and square on the off side, with point pushed back, inviting the lofted cut that has been both option and risk in that channel. The length was fractionally short of driving, wide enough to reach for. Suryakumar obliged, carving without complete control, and the ball carried to the man placed precisely for that miscue at deep point as Ghosh celebrated his maiden IPL wicket.<\/p>\n

Tilak Varma\u2019s end followed an equally deliberate script. With his preference for the sweep and slog-sweep under pressure mapped, Noor adjusted both field and method. Extra cover was brought in to close the drive, midwicket held deeper to protect the release. Noor then resorted to a conventional looping leg-break against a batter looking to break free, having made only five off seven. Sure enough, Tilak tried to slog sweep against the turn, only to offer a tame catch in the ring.<\/p>\n

From there, pressure dictated terms. Dhir\u2019s 50 lacked fluency, and his dismissal attempting to accelerate typified Chennai\u2019s method, offering just enough to tempt risk. Pandya\u2019s 18 off 23, confined by fields that mirrored the plan, was where his team\u2019s misery finally stalled, the squeeze tightening into a point of no return.<\/p>\n
