Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg said fears that private investment in the Big \u200bBash League (BBL) could lead to the tournament ceding control to \u200cIndian Premier League (IPL) franchise owners are overblown.<\/p>\n
CA\u2019s privatisation \u200bplan for the BBL has stalled after \u2060the Australian board failed to achieve consensus with state members. New South Wales rejected the proposal while Queensland deferred its decision.<\/p>\n
Some \u200cconcerns stem from the growing global footprint of IPL franchise owners, who now control or \u200chold stakes in teams in T20 competitions in \u200cEngland, \u2060South Africa, the United Arab Emirates and the \u2060West Indies.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think that\u2019s overblown,\u201d Greenberg told SEN Radio<\/i> on Monday. \u201cIndia are such a huge part of cricket, but we\u2019re not looking \u200bto sell the game \u200cto India. That\u2019s it, full stop. We are looking to add value to our clubs and bring good partners in, and the decision on who those partners \u200cis at the behest of the states. So, it\u2019s \u200bon them to choose their partners.\u201d<\/p>\n
CA had hoped to raise up to $427 million to future-proof \u2060the sport, boost its finances and improve Australia\u2019s competitiveness in T20 cricket.<\/p>\n
Greenberg said Australian cricket should not shut the \u200cdoor on Indian investors.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat I find a little polarising is almost every business (and) every government agency I talk to are desperately keen to do business in India to create diplomacy, trade and opportunity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, the flip of that is that we would look \u200cto do that in our country as well, in some parts \u200bof the BBL, not the entire part. I think we\u2019ve got to have a very open \u2060mind.\u201d<\/p>\n
Greenberg added that CA was examining whether the BBL could \u2060operate with some teams having private capital and ownership and others being run under a more \u200ctraditional model.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think the answer to that is yes. But we have to do the piece of \u200bwork first,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
