Germany World Cup winner and TV pundit Bastian Schweinsteiger on Friday \u200brejected claims his comments on African football were racist, saying he \u2060was merely delivering an analysis of a playing style, with Germany\u2019s state broadcaster backing him.<\/p>\n

Ivory Coast coach Emerse Fae had said on Thursday that Schweinsteiger\u2019s comments in which he \u200chad called African football \u201cwild\u201d and \u201cunorthodox\u201d could be labelled racist.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was talking about football, not people,\u201d Schweinsteiger said in a statement through broadcaster ARD<\/i> \u200cto Reuters<\/i>. \u201cThis is a football analysis\u2014nothing more, nothing less. I certainly did \u200cnot \u2060intend to offend anyone.\u201d Schweinsteiger, a 2014 World Cup winner with \u2060Germany, is a pundit at the World Cup for ARD.<\/p>\n

Last week, before Germany beat the Ivory Coast in its second Group E fixture in Toronto, he said that Germany needed to be \u201cprepared for \u200bit to be unpredictable at times\u201d.<\/p>\n

He \u200csaid Ivory Coast played \u201cAfrican football\u201d, which he characterised as \u201ca bit unorthodox sometimes, a bit wild, not quite as tactical\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cBastian Schweinsteiger commented on his expectations regarding the Ivory Coast team\u2019s style of play, summarising his experiences and observations from recent \u200cmatches,\u201d said ARD<\/i> Sports coordinator Axel Balkausky in the statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe discussion was \u200babout a footballing assessment, not the people themselves. I cannot detect any form of racism in his remarks or his choice of \u2060words.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the Ivory Coast coach, Emerse Fae, were to speak directly with Bastian, I am certain his suspicions would be dispelled in no time. Perhaps such an opportunity \u200cwill arise later in the tournament,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Ivory Coast coach expresses disappointment<\/h4>\n

Asked for a reaction after Ivory Coast beat Curacao 2-0 on Thursday to finish runners-up behind Germany and advance to the last 32 at the World Cup, Fae told reporters he was disappointed by Schweinsteiger\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you know football the way he knows it, then it\u2019s odd that he would speak that way … which we could call \u200cracist if we were calling a spade a spade,\u201d said Fae. \u201cBut that\u2019s the way it is. \u200bNowadays, we live in a world where everybody is free to say what they think.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t change his perspective. I can\u2019t change \u2060the way he talks. But all I can do is show on the pitch \u2060that Africa is not just the physical game. We are very technical as well and very tactical.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was a worldwide star but has kind \u200cof been forgotten a little bit, so he\u2019s trying to create a buzz. Good for him, if that\u2019s what he thinks. He\u2019s free to do \u200bso. But we will move forward and we\u2019ll try to ignore that,\u201d Fae added.<\/p>\n
