{"id":188373,"date":"2026-07-01T05:49:20","date_gmt":"2026-07-01T11:19:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newslink360.space\/?p=188373"},"modified":"2026-07-01T05:49:20","modified_gmt":"2026-07-01T11:19:20","slug":"autism-tied-to-psychosis-spectrum-emj","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newslink360.space\/?p=188373","title":{"rendered":"Autism Tied to Psychosis Spectrum \u2013 EMJ"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emjreviews.com\/cardiology\/news\/parents-of-neurodivergent-children-face-higher-cardiovascular-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AUTISM<\/a> is strongly associated with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emjreviews.com\/neurology\/news\/psychotic-experiences-may-cause-early-brain-ageing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">psychosis spectrum<\/a>, both at trait and diagnostic levels, a new systematic review and meta-analysis has found.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>However, it was previously unknown whether the link was due to methodological issues.<\/p>\n<p>For example, it could have arisen from people with autism misinterpreting psychosis questionnaires or clinicians having difficulty distinguishing between the two conditions.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Experiencing One Condition Leads to Higher Odds of the Other<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Researchers included studies in the review assessing autism and psychosis-spectrum measurements, as well as co-morbidity and quantitative data.<\/p>\n<p>Almost seven million participants were included in analysis.<\/p>\n<p>A strong association was found between autism and the psychosis spectrum, at both trait and diagnostic levels.<\/p>\n<p>People with one condition had approximately seven times higher odds of being diagnosed with the other.<\/p>\n<p>They also scored substantially higher on trait measures of the other condition.<\/p>\n<p>Negative psychosis-spectrum traits, meaning a lessening or absence of normal behaviours and functions related to motivation, interest, or expression,<sup>2<\/sup> were most strongly tied to autistic traits.<\/p>\n<p>Whereas, measures of positive traits, relating to the presence of unusual traits or experiences,<sup>3<\/sup> showed weaker correlations.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers pointed to an overlap in expression and measurement to explain the variable symptomatic links.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>High Heterogeneity and Inconsistent Reporting<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Authors warned, however, of high heterogeneity and inconsistent reporting among included studies.<\/p>\n<p>Further research, they reported, should aim to remedy these issues to better understand the crossover between autism and psychosis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>References<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><sup>1<\/sup> Miles MR, Golm D, Palmer-Cooper E.
