In an Instagram video, she said, \u201cPoor sleep affects memory, focus, hormones, mood, metabolism, and even long-term disease risk. Your body can survive on less sleep. That does not mean it can perform well on it. Eight hours of quality sleep is not laziness. It is basic biological maintenance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But what actually happens to the body when six hours of sleep becomes the norm instead of the recommended seven to nine hours? According to Dr (Major) Rajesh Bhardwaj, Consultant, Med First ENT Center, chronic sleep deprivation can have far-reaching consequences for women\u2019s physical and mental health.<\/p>\n<p><ev-engagement group-name=\"contentLogin\"\/><ev-engagement group-name=\"myNotification\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"ev-meter-content ie-premium-content-block\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyloading\" data-lazy-type=\"lazyloading-image\" src=\"https:\/\/data.indianexpress.com\/election2019\/track_1x1.jpg\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/data.indianexpress.com\/election2019\/track_1x1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1px\" height=\"1px\" style=\"display:none;\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting only six hours of sleep on a regular basis can interfere with the body\u2019s hormonal balance, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/lifestyle\/seven-habits-of-master-sleepers-10570158\/\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">immune function, metabolism and brain health,\u201d<\/a><\/strong> says Dr Bhardwaj.<\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"bg-highlight-yellow\">DISCLAIMER: This article is based on information from the public domain and\/or the experts we spoke to.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>He explains that inadequate sleep can raise stress hormones such as cortisol, making it harder for the body to regulate blood sugar and appetite.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen may experience higher cortisol levels, increased hunger due to changes in appetite-regulating hormones, low energy, poor concentration, mood changes and slower physical recovery,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, the effects extend beyond fatigue. \u201cLong-term sleep deprivation can also affect reproductive hormones, menstrual cycles and overall health,\u201d Dr Bhardwaj adds.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" style=\"background: #FFF;border: 0;border-radius: 3px;margin: 1px;max-width: 540px;min-width: 326px;padding: 0;width: calc(100% - 2px)\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DY4ogpVRF4w\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\">\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Can too little sleep increase the risk of chronic diseases?<\/h2>\n<p>According to Dr Bhardwaj, the evidence linking insufficient sleep to several chronic health conditions is strong. \u201cChronic sleep deprivation is robustly associated with anxiety, depression, obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<div class=\"adboxtop adsizes\">\n<p>Story continues below this ad<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Sleep also plays an important role in women\u2019s hormonal health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPoor sleep can contribute to hormonal imbalances that may worsen conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), although sleep is usually one of several contributing factors rather than the sole cause,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n<p>While the relationship between sleep and thyroid disorders is less direct, Dr Bhardwaj notes that inadequate sleep can aggravate symptoms and negatively <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/lifestyle\/health\/quality-of-your-sleep-may-be-affecting-the-liver-too-heres-how-10695870\/\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">affect overall metabolic health.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn general, regularly sleeping six hours or less is linked to a higher long-term risk of several chronic diseases,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<div class=\"adboxtop adsizes\">\n<p>Story continues below this ad<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>What if eight hours of sleep isn\u2019t possible?<\/h2>\n<p>While consistently getting adequate sleep should remain the goal, Dr Bhardwaj says improving sleep quality can help reduce some of the health risks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe importance of good-quality sleep cannot be overstated,\u201d he says. He recommends maintaining a consistent bedtime and wake-up schedule, avoiding caffeine and heavy meals close to bedtime, limiting screen time for at least an hour before sleeping and keeping the bedroom cool, dark and quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegular exercise is beneficial, but it should ideally not be done immediately before bedtime. Stress-management practices such as meditation and deep breathing can also improve sleep quality,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Short daytime naps of 20 to 30 minutes may help reduce sleep debt without interfering with nighttime sleep. However, he cautions that naps should not become a substitute for adequate rest. \u201cConsistently sleeping fewer than seven hours should not become the norm.
