However, its complex anatomy and natural variation can make pelvic lymph node dissection technically demanding, increasing the importance of\u00a0accurate\u00a0identification of surrounding structures. The researchers therefore developed an\u00a0AI\u00a0model to\u00a0determine\u00a0whether it could improve surgeons\u2019 recognition of key pelvic anatomy during the procedure.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">AI-Assisted Anatomical Recognition<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The study involved 36 surgeons from colorectal,\u00a0gynaecological\u00a0and urological specialties with varying levels of experience, who reviewed 640 video snippets of 0.5 s extracted from pelvic lymph node dissection procedures. An AI model was developed using 23,259 annotated images and 653 unannotated images derived from 293 surgical videos.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The model was trained to\u00a0identify\u00a0key anatomical structures relevant to pelvic lymph node dissection, including the ureter, obturator nerve, external iliac\u00a0artery\u00a0and external iliac vein. It was designed to support anatomical recognition during surgery across different specialties and experience levels.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Across threefold cross-validation, Dice similarity coefficients were 0.6483 for the ureter, 0.8654 for the obturator nerve, 0.8619 for the external iliac artery and 0.8736 for the external iliac vein.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Impact\u00a0on Surgeon Performance<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">AI\u00a0assistance\u00a0significantly improved surgeons\u2019 sensitivity and specificity in\u00a0identifying\u00a0pelvic anatomical structures during assessment (p&lt;0.001). Improvements were\u00a0observed\u00a0across colorectal,\u00a0gynaecological\u00a0and urological specialties, regardless of experience level.\u00a0The findings suggest that AI support enhanced surgeons\u2019 ability to recognise the anatomical structures evaluated during the study,\u00a0demonstrating\u00a0consistent benefits across participants with differing levels of surgical experience.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Clinical Implications<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The authors suggest that the model could provide support for surgeons during pelvic lymph node dissection regardless of specialty or experience.
