{"id":191468,"date":"2026-07-08T07:10:31","date_gmt":"2026-07-08T12:40:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newslink360.space\/?p=191468"},"modified":"2026-07-08T07:10:31","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T12:40:31","slug":"rumination-linked-to-depression-in-adolescents-emj","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newslink360.space\/?p=191468","title":{"rendered":"Rumination Linked to Depression in Adolescents \u2013 EMJ"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>    RUMINATION and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emjreviews.com\/neurology\/news\/could-intermittent-fasting-protect-against-stress-related-depression\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depression<\/a> show a significant correlation in adolescents, a new meta-analysis has found.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Findings suggested that rumination may play a key role in adolescent mental health.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Depression<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>An estimated 5.7% of adults suffer from depression, with more women affected than men.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>It involves a depressed mood or loss of pleasure or interest in activities for prolonged periods of time.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Rumination<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Rumination can be understood as the exhausting mental loop of repetitive, intrusive negative thinking.<\/p>\n<p>Research suggests this arises partly from a disturbance in the coupling between the posterior cingulate cortex, a region involved in internal self-referential thinking, and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, which is linked to external goal-directed behaviour, according to the ATR Brain Information Communication Research Laboratory Group.<\/p>\n<p>Rumination has also been previously identified as a vulnerability factor for anxiety.<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Prior research has also found a moderate positive association between rumination and rejection sensitivity.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers have stressed the value of such findings in informing prevention efforts for reducing psychological vulnerability.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Analysing the Relationship Between Rumination and Depression<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Researchers analysed a total of 29 studies, which involved more than 24,000 adolescents.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>They found a significant correlation between rumination and depression, of 0.61.<\/p>\n<p>The link was stronger among middle school students, female-dominated samples, European studies, developed countries, and research published before 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Studies with larger sample sizes also showed a stronger correlation.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers highlighted the role of this key evidence in shaping effective prevention and intervention strategies.<\/p>\n<p>This, they reported could help to address depression in adolescents, noting that they are a vulnerable population.<\/p>\n<p><strong>References<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><sup>1<\/sup> Tao S et al.
