{"id":192857,"date":"2026-07-12T05:48:14","date_gmt":"2026-07-12T11:18:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newslink360.space\/?p=192857"},"modified":"2026-07-12T05:48:14","modified_gmt":"2026-07-12T11:18:14","slug":"cancer-cases-projected-to-double-by-2050-says-who","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newslink360.space\/?p=192857","title":{"rendered":"Cancer Cases Projected to Double by 2050, Says WHO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>    WHO has called for urgent action as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emjreviews.com\/oncology\/news\/teenage-cancer-trust-launches-football-print-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cancer<\/a> cases are projected to nearly double by 2050.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Nearly 35 Million Annual Cases by 2050<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Cancer claims more than 26,000 lives every day, according to a new report released by WHO on 8<sup>th<\/sup> July 2026.<\/p>\n<p>With an estimated 20.6 million new cases and close to 10 million deaths annually, the disease remains the second leading cause of death globally after cardiovascular disease.<\/p>\n<p>Without urgent action, annual cancer cases are projected to rise to nearly 35 million by 2050.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Inequitable Access to Cancer Care<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The WHO Global Status Report on Cancer 2026, developed jointly with the International Agency for Research on Cancer, provides comprehensive analysis of progress across key areas such as political commitment, cancer prevention, and investment in treatment.<\/p>\n<p>However, the report also reveals persistent and widening inequities in access to prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and supportive care, leaving millions of people without the services they need.<\/p>\n<p>Analysis showed that while 87% of women with breast cancer survive at five years after their diagnosis in high-income countries, only about 42% do so in low-income countries.<\/p>\n<p>Fewer than one in three countries currently include cancer care in their universal health coverage packages.<\/p>\n<p>Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General, WHO, Geneva, Switzerland, said: \u201cCancer is a deeply personal disease that touches nearly all of us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut whether a person survives cancer should never depend on where they were born or what they earn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe inequities documented in this report are not inevitable; they are the consequence of choices, and they can be reversed through stronger and unified action.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Financial and Social Hardship<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Beyond health impacts, WHO highlighted, cancer remains one of the most financially and socially devastating challenges a household can face.<\/p>\n<p>WHO\u2019s first-ever survey of people affected by cancer found that at least 45% experience financial hardship, more than half report mental health challenges, and nearly all caregivers report strain including unpaid services and social isolation.<\/p>\n<p>The new report outlined seven key recommendations and three strategic shifts to be implemented across all countries and communities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Better capabilities: integrate cancer control into universal health coverage\u00a0and invest in human capital to prevent and control cancer<\/li>\n<li>Better protections: place people with lived experience at the centre\u00a0of cancer systems\u00a0while strengthening social protection<\/li>\n<li>Better value: align research and innovation with public health needs and ensure\u00a0equitable\u00a0access to\u00a0valued-based\u00a0advances in care<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By adopting a people-centred\u00a0approach, WHO reported,\u00a0making strategic and sustained investments, and\u00a0maintaining\u00a0an\u00a0unwavering commitment to equity,\u00a0countries can reduce the cancer burden\u00a0and improve outcomes for\u00a0everyone, everywhere.<\/p>\n<p><em>Featured image: Haas\/peopleimages.com on Adobe Stock<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emjreviews.com\/oncology\/news\/cancer-cases-projected-to-double-by-2050-says-who\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WHO has called for urgent action as cancer cases are projected to nearly double by 2050.
