{"id":193591,"date":"2026-07-15T05:15:01","date_gmt":"2026-07-15T10:45:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newslink360.space\/?p=193591"},"modified":"2026-07-15T05:15:01","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T10:45:01","slug":"carbapenem-resistance-genes-found-in-hospital-pathogens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newslink360.space\/?p=193591","title":{"rendered":"Carbapenem Resistance Genes Found in Hospital Pathogens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"488\" data-end=\"811\">Carbapenem-resistant <em data-start=\"509\" data-end=\"533\">Pseudomonas aeruginosa<\/em> and <em data-start=\"538\" data-end=\"563\">Acinetobacter baumannii<\/em> continue to pose a major threat to healthcare systems worldwide, with new research from Nepal highlighting the significant burden of multidrug resistance and the widespread presence of clinically important resistance genes among hospital isolates.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"813\" data-end=\"1223\">Published in <em data-start=\"826\" data-end=\"844\">BMC Microbiology<\/em>, the study characterised the phenotypic and molecular mechanisms of carbapenem resistance in clinical isolates collected from a tertiary care hospital in central Nepal. Both pathogens are recognised by the World Health Organization as priority bacterial pathogens because of their role in healthcare-associated infections and their increasing resistance to multiple antibiotics.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"dixlsk\" data-start=\"1225\" data-end=\"1273\">High Levels of Multidrug Resistance Observed<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1275\" data-end=\"1466\">Researchers analysed 59 bacterial isolates collected between April 2021 and December 2022, including 27 <em data-start=\"1379\" data-end=\"1394\">P. aeruginosa<\/em> and 32 <em data-start=\"1402\" data-end=\"1416\">A. baumannii<\/em> samples obtained from various clinical specimens.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1468\" data-end=\"1782\">Antibiotic susceptibility testing revealed that 76.3% of isolates were multidrug resistant, while nearly two-thirds (63.0%) produced extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs). Carbapenem resistance was identified in 62.7% of all isolates, underlining the considerable treatment challenges posed by these organisms.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1784\" data-end=\"2014\">Among the carbapenem-resistant isolates, more than three-quarters were found to produce metallo-beta-lactamases\u2014enzymes that can inactivate carbapenem antibiotics\u2014and over 70% carried at least one known carbapenem resistance gene.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"cwqkey\" data-start=\"2016\" data-end=\"2056\">Multiple Resistance Genes Identified<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2058\" data-end=\"2379\">Molecular analysis identified several important resistance determinants in both bacterial species. The ESBL-associated gene <em data-start=\"2182\" data-end=\"2192\">blaCTX-M<\/em> was the most frequently detected, occurring in 58.8% of <em data-start=\"2249\" data-end=\"2264\">P. aeruginosa<\/em> isolates and 87.5% of <em data-start=\"2287\" data-end=\"2301\">A. baumannii<\/em> isolates. The <em data-start=\"2316\" data-end=\"2324\">blaTEM<\/em> gene was present in 29% of isolates from both species.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2381\" data-end=\"2646\">Among carbapenem-resistant <em data-start=\"2408\" data-end=\"2423\">P. aeruginosa<\/em>, <em data-start=\"2425\" data-end=\"2435\">blaVIM-2<\/em> was the predominant resistance gene, detected in 58.3% of isolates. The researchers also identified <em data-start=\"2536\" data-end=\"2546\">blaNDM-1<\/em> and <em data-start=\"2551\" data-end=\"2562\">blaOXA-23<\/em>, both of which are associated with resistance to last-line antimicrobial therapies.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2648\" data-end=\"2958\">Similarly, more than half of carbapenem-resistant <em data-start=\"2698\" data-end=\"2712\">A. baumannii<\/em> isolates harboured <em data-start=\"2732\" data-end=\"2743\">blaOXA-23<\/em>, while nearly one-third carried <em data-start=\"2776\" data-end=\"2786\">blaNDM-1<\/em>. Several isolates contained combinations of resistance genes, including <em data-start=\"2859\" data-end=\"2869\">blaNDM-1<\/em>, <em data-start=\"2871\" data-end=\"2882\">blaOXA-23<\/em>, and <em data-start=\"2888\" data-end=\"2899\">blaOXA-58<\/em>, potentially further limiting available treatment options.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"t3v3g5\" data-start=\"2960\" data-end=\"2998\">Implications for Clinical Practice<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3000\" data-end=\"3330\">The co-occurrence of multiple resistance mechanisms highlights the increasing complexity of treating infections caused by these pathogens. Carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacteria are associated with prolonged hospitalisation, increased healthcare costs, and poorer patient outcomes, particularly among critically ill patients.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3332\" data-end=\"3696\">The authors emphasise that routine antimicrobial resistance surveillance is essential for informing antibiotic stewardship programmes and guiding appropriate antimicrobial prescribing.
