The pit, centered around Lake Marsal, was about 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) in diameter and a near-perfect ring \u2014 it didn&#8217;t seem like a normal ditch. Lapointe eventually got in touch with French geophysicist Pierre Rochette, who said that the surrounding topography was &#8220;very suggestive&#8221; of an impact crater.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\"\/><\/p>\n<aside data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" class=\"hawk-root\"\/>\n<p id=\"elk-c005411c-8136-11f1-a862-9fd3daecaca3-0\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Initial testing of samples retrieved from the site contained a mineral called zircon often formed during meteor impacts. However, zircon&#8217;s presence alone was not enough to prove the crater&#8217;s extraterrestrial origin story. So a team of scientists had visited the pit in person.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">&#8220;One of the key things we look for is evidence for shock metamorphism, which can only occur due to the immense pressures created by asteroid or cometary impacts \u2014 or nuclear explosions,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spacerocks.ca\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.spacerocks.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Gordon Osinski,<\/u><\/a> a professor of planetary geology at Western University, told Live Science in an email. &#8220;Most of these features are microscopic, so you can only confirm in the lab with samples.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">But there is one feature Osinski said can be seen with the naked eye: grooves or lines in the rock&#8217;s surface called shatter cones, which are caused by shockwaves passing through the ground.<\/p>\n<aside data-component-name=\"Recirculation:ArticleRiver\" data-recirculation-type=\"inline\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Trending Bar\" data-nosnippet=\"\" class=\"clear-both pt-2 pb-0 mb-4\">\n        <span class=\"&#10;            flex&#10;            after:content-[''] after:flex-1 after:ml-4 after:my-[0.7rem] after:border-t after:border-solid after:border-[#333]&#10;            before:content-[''] before:flex-1 before:mr-4 before:my-[0.7rem] before:border-t before:border-solid before:border-[#333]&#10;            font-article-heading pb-0 text-[length:var(--article-river-title--font-size,1em)] uppercase sm:text-[length:var(--article-river-title--font-size,0.875em)] font-normal&#10;        \"><br \/>\n            You may like<br \/>\n        <\/span><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">In October 2025, Osinski and a team of geologists visited the site to investigate whether any of these features were present. &#8220;This was one of the most arduous expeditions I\u2019ve ever done \u2014 and I\u2019ve done 25 expeditions to the Arctic and 6 continents,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The terrain was incredibly rough and rugged, plus [there were] lots of bugs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">But they eventually found what they were looking for \u2014 shatter cones. B) melt rock 4 km (2.5 miles) west of the structure center<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><p>(Image credit: Gattacceca, J. et al.)<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"elk-c00542f2-8136-11f1-bb98-b39cf9cea6e2\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Osinski, who runs a website called Impact Earth dedicated to verifying meteor impact sites, is used to getting emails about strange looking satellite images. &#8220;I get lots of messages from the public thinking they have found a crater and 99\/100 turn out not to be the case,&#8221; he told Live Science. &#8220;This is one of those rare examples that shows this is possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">So far, we know of roughly 200 impact craters on Earth, 31 of which have been found in Canada. &#8220;Typically about 1 or 2 craters are discovered per year, but these are typically less than 5-10 km [3 to 6 miles] in size,&#8221; Osinski said. &#8220;[A crater of this size] is pretty rare.&#8221;<\/p>\n<aside data-component-name=\"Recirculation:ArticleRiver\" data-recirculation-type=\"inline\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Trending Bar\" data-nosnippet=\"\" class=\"clear-both pt-2 pb-0 mb-4\">\n        <span class=\"&#10;            flex&#10;            after:content-[''] after:flex-1 after:ml-4 after:my-[0.7rem] after:border-t after:border-solid after:border-[#333]&#10;            before:content-[''] before:flex-1 before:mr-4 before:my-[0.7rem] before:border-t before:border-solid before:border-[#333]&#10;            font-article-heading pb-0 text-[length:var(--article-river-title--font-size,1em)] uppercase sm:text-[length:var(--article-river-title--font-size,0.875em)] font-normal&#10;        \"><br \/>\n            What to read next<br \/>\n        <\/span><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">The last meteor crater confirmed in Canada was in 2010.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-c00544d2-8136-11f1-9e7f-ff4c5bc13f23\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">After the new investigation confirmed the pit was punched out by a meteor impact, Osinski, Rochette and their team named it Uhaachatik Crater following discussions with the Ekuanitshit Innu council, a council representing the indigenous people in the area.
