Credit: NASA\/JPL-Caltech\/ASU\/MSSS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>An ancient impact almost as old as the Solar System<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Referred to as the &#8216;Broom Point member&#8217; by the Perseverance science team, the layered bedrock discovered by the rover is likely more than 3.9 billion years old, according to NASA.<\/p>\n<p>For reference, the Solar System itself is about 4.5 billion years old. That makes it among the oldest terrain ever examined by a Mars rover.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since leaving Jezero, Perseverance has been exploring a brand-new frontier, both geographically and geologically \u2013 a chapter of Martian time that predates the crater itself,&#8221; says Ken Farley, Perseverance deputy project scientist at Caltech.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On Earth, our earliest geologic history has been fundamentally broken up, deformed and erased by plate tectonics.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Because Mars lacks plate tectonics to recycle its crust, this ancient record remains intact, giving us a rare glimpse into a geological time period that doesn\u2019t exist on our own planet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large has-lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/resources\/content\/9867779f-bbeb-44ef-a0d0-ca4e39424e99\/4f9719fc-fc0e-4c2c-8780-00c0ff5ded1c\/32da900b-f500-4742-b7ce-206d3038b590\/asteroid-hitting-planet.jpg?preview=false&amp;platform=WEB&amp;deviceId=1f5675eb-a0c7-449c-a217-c0b8749fde4f\" alt=\"Artist's impression of an asteroid hitting a planet. Credit: mikdam \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A geological detective on Mars<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In late 2024, Perseverance ascended the rim of Jezero Crater, leaving the region behind, and began examining the surrounding locations.<\/p>\n<p>The rover is equipped with science instruments that enable it to photograph and analyse rocks and other materials on the surface of Mars.<\/p>\n<p>This information is then beamed back to scientists on Earth, who use it to make discoveries pertaining to Mars&#8217;s ancient history.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, the data gathered by Perseverance at Broom Point revealed six distinct rock types.<\/p>\n<p>That includes breccias \u2014 rocks composed of angular fragments \u2014 alternating with layers of fine-grained, pulverised rock dust.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large has-lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"961\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/resources\/content\/9867779f-bbeb-44ef-a0d0-ca4e39424e99\/4f9719fc-fc0e-4c2c-8780-00c0ff5ded1c\/a8f82573-8c04-4917-b35f-dee8e398cb31\/perseverance-rover-jezero-crater-region.jpg?preview=false&amp;platform=WEB&amp;deviceId=1f5675eb-a0c7-449c-a217-c0b8749fde4f\" alt=\"Image showing the area of Jezero Crater explored by the Perseverance rover. Credit: ESA\/DLR\/FU Berlin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Scientists say rock fragments found within the breccias are filled with gas-bubble cavities, which suggests they were once molten.<\/p>\n<p>Perseverance also found small, dark glassy beads within the layers. That, says NASA, gives scientists strong evidence that they formed primarily from asteroid impacts.<\/p>\n<p>NASA says the largest beads would rival those flung out by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/chicxulub-asteroid-killed-dinosaurs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chicxulub asteroid<\/a> when it impacted Earth, killing the dinosaurs.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s more, the layering reveals a repetition of distinct rock types multiple times throughout, suggesting that high-energy asteroid impacts occurred repeatedly in this region of early Mars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe different rock layers are a record of variable-sized impacts occurring at different distances from where this rock sequence was accumulating,\u201d says Alex Jones at Imperial College London and lead author of the paper.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Some large impacts took place very far away, some small impacts nearby. Credit: NASA\/JPL-Caltech<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>One-two punch<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The team suspect what they call a &#8216;one-two punch&#8217; may have shaped the landscape.<\/p>\n<p>An initial asteroid impact produced the 1,900-km-wide (1,200 miles) Isidis Basin, which is one of the largest impact basins on Mars.
