Turns out, some can. But now, a new study has tossed an even bigger worry into the mix: microbes hitching a ride with astronauts might not just hang on; they could actually evolve in Mars\u2019 extreme environment and become more dangerous to humans.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"2\"\/>Now, let\u2019s be clear about this: this isn\u2019t about Martian germs waiting to jump out and attack us at the first chance they get. The real concern is our own bacteria \u2014 the same kinds that already live on and inside us. Mars hits life with a nasty combo of intense radiation, freezing cold, toxic salts, and barely any air. Apparently, some microbes could react to this punishment by changing in ways that make them tougher and maybe even more likely to cause hard-to-treat infections.<!-- --> For space agencies planning long missions, that\u2019s a problem they can\u2019t ignore.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"7\"\/><\/p>\n<h2>What triggered this new warning?<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Per Earth Sky, all this comes from the research of Tommaso Zaccaria, a microbiologist at the University of Edinburgh. His work zeroed in on how familiar \u201copportunistic\u201d bacteria (the ones that can cause infections in people when given a chance) might adapt if they wound up on Mars.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"10\"\/>He took four types of bacteria known for causing trouble under the right conditions and tested them with simulated Mars life: low air pressure, deep dehydration, harsh UV rays, and salty brines loaded with perchlorates \u2014 the kind of chemicals you\u2019ll find all over Mars.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"13\"\/>The idea wasn\u2019t to look for life on Mars, but to see what might happen when astronauts, full of their usual microbial hitchhikers, arrive there.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"15\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Can Earth microbes really make it on Mars?<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Now, Mars is no friend to life. Surface temperatures regularly drop below -60\u00b0C, its atmosphere is practically non-existent, there\u2019s hardly a drop of liquid water, and the place is swamped with UV radiation.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"18\"\/>Despite all that, Zaccaria found that some bacteria can hang on longer than anyone expected. <!-- -->On their own, some survived dehydration for over two weeks. Others shrugged off salty brines and super-low pressure. But, combine everything, and most were wiped out within a day.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"22\"\/>So Mars is still quite dangerous. But here\u2019s the catch: even surviving a day matters if the bugs make it into astronaut habitats, which are warm, damp, and full of oxygen.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"24\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Why could these bugs get more dangerous?<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">The real worry about these gems is adaptation, not just survival.<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"27\"\/>Put bacteria through enough stress, and they sometimes change \u2014 sometimes in ways that make them nastier, more infectious, or harder to kill. <!-- -->On Earth, we already know stress ramps up symptoms like toxin production, resistance to antibiotics, or the creation of protective biofilms.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"31\"\/>If bacteria riding along with astronauts start evolving in Mars-like conditions for months (or inside long-term space habitats), normal microbes might get a whole lot meaner. And after long trips, astronauts\u2019 immune systems are already weaker than usual, making infections even riskier.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"34\"\/>Sure, it\u2019s still a potential risk, and not a guarantee. Scientists want more studies, especially real-life data from future missions, before drawing conclusions.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"36\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">Moreover, space messes with your immune system, too.<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"38\"\/>Astronauts in space already deal with a weaker immune system because microgravity throws a lot of things out of balance. Space Station studies show that bacteria on board grow faster or become tougher to kill.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"41\"\/>So, it could be a perfect storm: astronauts\u2019 defences aren\u2019t what they should be, while their own microbes might be getting an upgrade.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"43\"\/><span class=\"strong\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">And, for the record, this isn\u2019t about catching Martian diseases.<\/span><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"45\"\/>Nobody has found life on Mars \u2014 no alien germs are swarming there. The focus is squarely on our own bacteria, the ones living with us every day. You can\u2019t get rid of them all, no matter how much you scrub a spaceship.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"47\"\/>That\u2019s why NASA, ESA, and others are so big on planetary protection. <!-- -->They want to stop Earth life from contaminating Mars. However, researchers just want everyone to think ahead. Mars is killer to most bacteria, and most get wiped out fast.
