The impact of different eGFR equations on risk assessment in older donors also\u00a0remains\u00a0unclear.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The analysis included 131 living kidney donors aged 60 years or older at the time of donation, with a median follow up of 12 years. Researchers assessed kidney function using three commonly applied eGFR equations at baseline,\u00a0one\u00a0year after donation, and during long term follow up.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Across all assessment methods, kidney function\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0a similar pattern, with\u00a0an initial\u00a0reduction following kidney donation followed by long term stability. Although 37.0% of donors experienced an eGFR decline greater than 40%, chronological age, including age 70 years or older, was not associated with a faster\u00a0long-term\u00a0reduction in kidney function.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The findings suggested that biological and cardiometabolic factors were more influential than age alone when evaluating long term kidney donation outcomes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Factors Influencing Long Term Kidney Function<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The study\u00a0identified\u00a0several factors associated with a steeper decline in renal function after kidney donation. Reduced renal adaptation at\u00a01\u00a0year, baseline hypertension, higher body mass index, and female sex were independently linked with less favourable long term kidney trajectories.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Among donors who\u00a0maintained\u00a0preserved kidney function, defined as an eGFR of at least 45 mL\/min\/1.73 m\u00b2, albuminuria helped\u00a0identify\u00a0a subgroup with potentially less favourable renal outcomes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The researchers also found that the classification of kidney function varied\u00a0considerably depending\u00a0on the eGFR equation applied, particularly at\u00a01\u00a0year after donation. These findings highlighted the importance of evaluating kidney function trends over time rather than relying only on single threshold measurements.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Assessing Risk After Kidney Donation<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Relevant perioperative complications were uncommon, occurring in 2.3% of donors, and no donor\u00a0required\u00a0renal replacement therapy during follow up. The findings support\u00a0the continued consideration of kidney donation among selected older individuals when comprehensive risk assessment is undertaken.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Conclusion<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The study concluded that long term monitoring should incorporate individual biological and clinical characteristics alongside\u00a0appropriate interpretation\u00a0of eGFR estimates.
