His recall for the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe matters for a simple reason: India gets back one of its fastest bowlers, and Mayank gets a chance to start rebuilding a career that injury has interrupted again and again.<\/p>\n<p>Few fast bowlers anywhere possess his natural gift for pace. When he burst onto the IPL scene in 2024, speeds above 150 kmph became routine, the ball skidding through with a steep bounce that batters struggled to read. It was enough to fast-track him into the Indian setup and earn him a special fast bowler\u2019s contract with the BCCI. At that point, it seemed India had found a rare talent.<\/p>\n<p>Staying fit long enough to use that talent turned out to be the real test.<\/p>\n<p>A stress fracture of the back, arriving soon after his international debut, stalled his progress. A second, freakish injury during rehabilitation pushed his return back further still. By the time he came back for IPL 2026, the numbers told an uneasy story: four matches, no wickets, an economy rate above 11 an over, and pace that had slipped from the 150 kmph range down to the high 130s, touching 140 only occasionally.<\/p>\n<p>Those numbers raised the obvious questions. Was he holding back to protect his body, or had the injuries changed his bowling for good? Perhaps he simply needed overs in the middle to find his rhythm again.<\/p>\n<p>The Zimbabwe series is unlikely to settle any of that outright. What it can offer instead is continuity \u2014 the kind of low-stakes cricket India has often used to judge players on more than a wicket column. For Mayank, the real test will be whether he can string together spells at full tilt, hold his pace, execute his plans, and get through three games without breaking down again.<\/p>\n<p>India is building toward the next T20 World Cup cycle and looking for bowlers who can change a game on raw pace alone. A fully fit Mayank is still one of the few Indian quicks capable of doing exactly that.
