{"id":196115,"date":"2026-07-23T15:07:13","date_gmt":"2026-07-23T20:37:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newslink360.space\/?p=196115"},"modified":"2026-07-23T15:07:13","modified_gmt":"2026-07-23T20:37:13","slug":"this-years-ebola-outbreak-has-spread-faster-than-the-worst-on-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newslink360.space\/?p=196115","title":{"rendered":"This year\u2019s Ebola outbreak has spread faster than the worst on record"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"prism-article-body\">\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao MvWXB TjIXL aGjvy ebVHC \"><span class=\"oyrPY qlwaB AGxeB  \">ABUJA, Nigeria &#8212; <\/span>ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) \u2014 <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ebola-outbreak-congo-uganda-who-cdc-bb24e07d21fdbdc9e75056ad0352e8ae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Ebola outbreak<\/a> in Congo has killed over 1,000 people, reaching the grim milestone nearly three times faster than the <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ebola-outbreak-disease-health-congo-africa-f187db59b290ee4c6749872b54f8d735\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2014-2016 Ebola epidemic<\/a> that is considered the worst on record.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Data from Congo\u2019s Ministry of Health shows that as of Tuesday, the current <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/ebola-virus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outbreak<\/a>, declared on May 15, has recorded 2,536 confirmed cases, including 1,033 deaths.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">During the 2014-2016 outbreak, which recorded more than 28,000 cases, including over 11,000 deaths, it took eight months to reach 1,000 deaths from the first recorded case. This year&#8217;s outbreak has reached that toll in just over two months, making it <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/congo-ebola-outbreak-dispatch-10a0c2ea31cb66f06414bc8b76ce60e2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the fastest outbreak of the disease ever<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The ongoing outbreak has also recorded 2,500 cases almost three times quicker than that of 2014-2016.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">According to the World Health Organization, Ebola is caused by a group of viruses, of which three are known to cause large outbreaks: Ebola virus, Sudan virus and Bundibugyo virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">This year&#8217;s outbreak is caused by Bundibugyo virus, a rare variant which has <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/congo-ebola-clinical-trials-7b2077d7b1dac0ab7081d864f1b93de2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no approved vaccines or treatments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Meanwhile, the Ebola virus, which is the most common out of the three, induced the 2014-2016 outbreak, considered the deadliest in Congo&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The Bundibugyo outbreak is largely restricted to Congo except for a few countries, including <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ebola-congo-uganda-border-virus-b96734598ea95b1cdb71986c8b1adf43\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Uganda<\/a>. And in Congo, it&#8217;s limited to five provinces in the eastern region, which is close to the border with Uganda.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak had spread widely in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone and spilled over into nearby nations. A small number of cases were also reported in the United States and Europe, linked to West Africa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">This year&#8217;s outbreak has so far had a case fatality rate of 40%, and officials blame most of the deaths on patients reporting symptoms late.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The 2014-2016 outbreak, however, had a fatality rate of 66%, overwhelming health systems across multiple countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, the Ebola virus is the deadliest of the viruses known to have caused large Ebola outbreaks and up to 90% of cases caused by it are fatal if they receive no treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Officials say the peak of the current outbreak could still be ahead because the patient zero has not been confirmed and the majority of new cases are coming from outside the contacts being monitored, as well as delays in identifying the variant behind the virus when cases started being reported. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC eTIW sUzSN \">The 2014-2016 outbreak lasted about three years.
