Turlov was planning to run for deputy president under Arkady Dvorkovich, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chess.com\/news\/view\/arkady-dvorkovich-sanctioned-by-eu-ukrainian-sports-minister\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Union&#8217;s sanctions<\/a> on the current FIDE president have made that ticket impossible. Turlov joins Wadim Rosenstein, Jan Henric Buettner, and former FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov in announcing bids to run the international chess federation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since Dvorkovich was <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=OJ:L_202601843&amp;qid=1784841597943\" rel=\"ugc nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sanctioned yesterday by the EU<\/a> for &#8220;supporting actions or policies which undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine, or stability or security in Ukraine,&#8221; events have moved fast. Dvorkovich <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FIDE_chess\/status\/2080404859359310185\" rel=\"ugc nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> he had &#8220;decided to voluntarily suspend the exercise of [his] powers and duties as FIDE President with immediate effect&#8221; and passed his role to his deputy.<\/p>\n<p>Anand accepted, saying his focus will be on &#8220;ensuring continuity and serving the global chess family.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Following the decision by President Arkady Dvorkovich to suspend the exercise of his duties, and in accordance with the FIDE Charter, I have assumed the responsibilities of Interim President.<\/p>\n<p>I want to thank Arkady for his leadership and for putting the interests and stability\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/KexdV5WLal\" rel=\"ugc nofollow noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/t.co\/KexdV5WLal<\/a><br \/>\n\u2014 Viswanathan Anand (<span class=\"username v-user-popover\" v-user-popover=\"'vishy64theking'\" data-popup=\"hover\" data-username=\"vishy64theking\">@vishy64theking<\/span>) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/vishy64theking\/status\/2080519825546424328?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"ugc nofollow noreferrer noopener\">July 24, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Anand had been expected to step back from FIDE duties after the next election, but instead he&#8217;s once more a candidate to become FIDE deputy president, this time under Turlov, who announced his candidacy on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/tmrturlov\/posts\/pfbid02HLYoQsXYeRDjJN33YmYMwDgPG2Se6bszEUb7ngSRTbEbdtDtC5hhCMhPHR33uDPGl?__cft__[0]=AZbD9l4g4ENAaz-vsDE9VDG6gMQSkIvDACNNIxkasjqq59BezC_MJbuDa3mFm4vHBbC4r_A4xeqRYAXt-QvUCd7zMjfxb1U70RGjSxJwg4-I1rBrLWchLpxmu51x1PPiHNI9khMb7C_ZCXl8Rh6IxjHSniqNjodKLU2dpwmMv0QsLQ&amp;__tn__=%2CO%2CP-R\" rel=\"ugc nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a>. Turlov says of FIDE, &#8220;a federation with a century of history stands at a crossroads,&#8221; and states recent progress, &#8220;must be intensified, given fresh energy, and carried forward.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.chesscomfiles.com\/uploads\/v1\/images_users\/tiny_mce\/Colin_McGourty\/phpvc7sie5ttbn7cZRZ4vO.jpg\" style=\"display: block; margin: 0 auto; aspect-ratio:1354\/1322\" class=\"imageUploaderImg img-defer img-defer-placeholder\" alt=\"\" width=\"1354\" height=\"1322\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Turlov has been based in Kazakhstan since 2011, and renounced his Russian and St. Kitts and Nevis citizenship to become a citizen of Kazakhstan in 2022, after the outbreak of the full-scale war in Ukraine. In 2023, he became the president of the Kazakhstan Chess Federation, while he also heads the newly established International School Chess Federation (ISCF).<\/p>\n<p>Turlov&#8217;s NASDAQ-listed Freedom Holding company has been the major sponsor for numerous events, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chess.com\/events\/info\/2024-fide-world-rapid-chess-championships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2024 World Rapid &amp; Blitz Championships<\/a> that were held on Wall Street in New York. Turlov is joined by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chess.com\/news\/view\/buettner-rosenstein-announce-campaigns-for-fide-presidency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rosenstein and Buettner<\/a>, as well as Ilyumzhinov, who served as FIDE president from 1995 to 2018.
