{"id":196814,"date":"2026-07-25T04:00:52","date_gmt":"2026-07-25T09:30:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newslink360.space\/?p=196814"},"modified":"2026-07-25T04:00:52","modified_gmt":"2026-07-25T09:30:52","slug":"predicting-persistent-chronic-rhinosinusitis-in-kids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newslink360.space\/?p=196814","title":{"rendered":"Predicting Persistent Chronic Rhinosinusitis in Kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>    <span data-contrast=\"auto\">A 5-YEAR\u00a0prospective study has\u00a0identified\u00a0clinical and immunological markers that may help predict which preschool children with\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emjreviews.com\/respiratory\/news\/sleep-and-chronic-rhinosinusitis-after-surgery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">chronic rhinosinusitis<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(CRS) are likely to experience persistent disease and develop house dust mite (HDM)-induced allergic rhinitis.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The study followed 133 children aged 4\u20138 years with CRS symptoms, with or without IgE-mediated sensitisation to HDM, to investigate factors associated with disease progression. A total of 117 children completed the 5-year follow-up.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Baseline\u00a0Symptoms Linked to Long-Term\u00a0Chronic Rhinosinusitis\u00a0Persistence<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The researchers found that CRS persisted in 35% of participants, with symptom severity at preschool age\u00a0emerging\u00a0as a strong predictor of ongoing disease. Children with a baseline Sinus and Nasal Quality of Life Survey (SN-5) score greater than 3.6 were more than three times as likely to have persistent CRS at school age compared with those with lower scores (odds ratio [OR] 3.41; 95% CI 1.50\u20137.76).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The study also\u00a0identified\u00a0a potential immunological marker of disease persistence. Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC-2s), which are associated with type 2 inflammation, were detected more\u00a0frequently\u00a0in nasal samples from children whose CRS persisted throughout the study period.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In addition to predicting persistent CRS, the investigators examined factors associated with the later development of HDM-induced allergic rhinitis. A history of food allergy during infancy was independently associated with almost a four-fold increased likelihood of developing HDM allergy (OR 3.87; 95% CI 1.10\u201313.60). Similarly, children whose allergy-related symptoms accounted for at least 21% of their baseline SN-5 score were\u00a0nearly four\u00a0times more likely to receive a diagnosis of HDM-induced allergic rhinitis (OR 3.96; 95% CI 1.20\u201313.10).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The researchers reported that combining these clinical characteristics further improved the prediction of HDM allergy, suggesting that readily available clinical information could help\u00a0identify\u00a0children at increased risk before school age.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Early\u00a0Identification Could Support Timely Allergen Immunotherapy<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The authors conclude that assessing baseline symptom burden alongside immune and allergy-related factors may improve the early identification of children at risk of persistent CRS and HDM allergy. They suggest that recognising these high-risk patients earlier could support more\u00a0timely\u00a0initiation of allergen immunotherapy in\u00a0appropriate children, although further validation of the
