{"id":196878,"date":"2026-07-25T07:05:20","date_gmt":"2026-07-25T12:35:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newslink360.space\/?p=196878"},"modified":"2026-07-25T07:05:20","modified_gmt":"2026-07-25T12:35:20","slug":"frailty-associated-with-bph-and-urinary-symptoms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newslink360.space\/?p=196878","title":{"rendered":"Frailty Associated with BPH and Urinary Symptoms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>    <span data-contrast=\"auto\">HIGHER\u00a0levels of frailty are associated with an increased likelihood of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emjreviews.com\/urology\/news\/prostate-fibrosis-may-drive-lower-urinary-tract-symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">lower urinary tract symptoms<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(LUTS) in older men, according to findings from two nationally representative population-based studies conducted in China and the USA.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The study analysed data from 8,781 men in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and 2,539 men in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Researchers examined whether the frailty index (FI), a recognised measure of biological ageing based on accumulated health deficits, was associated with symptomatic BPH\/LUTS.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Increasing\u00a0Frailty Burden Tied to Greater Odds\u00a0of BPH\/LUTS<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Among participants, 11.9% of men in the Chinese cohort and 22.0% in the US cohort met the criteria for symptomatic BPH\/LUTS. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, increasing frailty was consistently associated with a higher likelihood of urinary symptoms in both populations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Each increase in the log-transformed frailty index was associated with a 91% increase in the odds of BPH\/LUTS in the CHARLS cohort (odds ratio [OR] 1.91; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.71\u20132.13) and a 47% increase in the NHANES cohort (OR 1.47; 95% CI 1.25\u20131.73).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The researchers also\u00a0observed\u00a0a graded relationship between frailty and urinary symptoms. Men in the highest frailty tertile were nearly three times more likely to have BPH\/LUTS than those in the lowest tertile in the Chinese cohort (OR 2.91; 95% CI 2.39\u20133.56) and almost twice as likely in the US cohort (OR 1.77; 95% CI 1.32\u20132.37). Statistical modelling suggested the relationship was linear, with no evidence that risk plateaued or accelerated at higher frailty levels.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Subgroup analyses\u00a0indicated\u00a0that the strength of the association varied according to drinking status in the Chinese cohort and age and smoking status in the US cohort, suggesting lifestyle and demographic factors may influence the relationship between frailty and urinary symptoms.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As a supplementary analysis, the investigators developed machine-learning models to assess risk stratification. These models\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0good internal predictive performance, although the authors caution that they have not yet undergone external validation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Longitudinal\u00a0Studies Needed to Establish Causality<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The researchers conclude that frailty burden is consistently associated with symptomatic BPH\/LUTS across diverse populations. However, because the study was\u00a0cross-sectional, it cannot\u00a0establish\u00a0whether frailty contributes to urinary symptoms or vice versa.
