There was, however, a sense of finality.

This was not a case of a player missing out because of a dip in form or a temporary fitness concern. Shami had done almost everything a senior cricketer could reasonably do after being pushed out of the national setup. He returned to domestic cricket, bowled long spells, put his body through the grind of the Ranji Trophy and finished with 37 wickets.

For a fast bowler in his mid-thirties, that was more than a statement of intent — it was a proof that the hunger still remained.

However, the selectors have looked elsewhere.

Sportstar understands that the selectors have now identified a pool of 15 young fast bowlers across formats whom they want to invest in over the next few years. The thinking is clear. With the next World Test Championship cycle underway and the 2027 ODI World Cup not too far away, India wants to build a pace attack for the future.

Shami, it is learnt, does not feature in those plans.

And perhaps that says more than any official statement ever could.

Indian cricket rarely tells its stalwarts that their time is up. More often, the message arrives through silence. A missed series becomes two, then three, before everyone quietly accepts what nobody has formally said.

Cheteshwar Pujara experienced it. So did Ishant Sharma and Wriddhiman Saha.

Shami now seems to be walking the same path.

The selectors’ reasoning isn’t difficult to understand. Fast bowling is a physically demanding craft, and Shami is no longer the future. If India is serious about building a pace battery that can serve the team for the next five or six years, opportunities have to come at the expense of someone.

RELATED | India Test squad for Sri Lanka tour announced: Full list, key inclusions and omissions

But then, this is where the decision also becomes a fascinating debate.

Because India’s pace attack itself is in transition.

The decision also becomes intriguing when viewed through the prism of India’s current pace resources. Jasprit Bumrah remains the leader of the attack, but his workload is now being managed more carefully than ever. After multiple injury setbacks over the last few years, the team management has accepted that Bumrah cannot be expected to play every Test series. Going forward, he is likely to pick and choose assignments, especially with major ICC events and marquee overseas tours taking precedence.

Which is why Shami’s omission feels curious. If Bumrah isn’t going to play every Test, was there really no place for someone who still knows how to win one?

Here was a bowler who knows how to win matches, thrives with the older ball, understands Indian conditions as well as overseas challenges, and has just come off a productive domestic season, bowling long spells.

Even if the selectors have earmarked a younger crop for the future, having Shami around for another season or two could have eased the transition rather than forcing it.

ALSO READ | How Hardik Pandya could transform CSK’s XI if blockbuster trade goes through

Nobody is questioning the need to invest in youth. The question is whether India had to shut the door on Shami altogether, especially when Bumrah’s appearances will have to be managed carefully.

Shami’s presence could have offered both insurance and mentorship, allowing the next generation to develop without immediately carrying the burden of leading India’s attack.

Perhaps the selectors believe that looking back would only delay the inevitable. But with Bumrah unlikely to feature in every Test and Mohammed Siraj now the only senior quick expected to shoulder the workload consistently, the decision to completely move on from Shami feels less straightforward than it first appears.

The selectors have made their choice. They are betting on tomorrow over yesterday. Whether that call proves right may depend less on the youngsters than on how often Bumrah is available over the next two years.

Published on Jul 28, 2026

Source link

When India’s squad for the two-Test series against Sri Lanka was announced on Tuesday, there was no surprise in Mohammed Shami’s omission.
