United States President Donald Trump has pledged a major escalation against Iran after the latest Iranian attacks<\/a> on US military sites in the Middle East.<\/p>\n

Trump made the threat in an expletive-laden interview with Fox News reporter Trey Yingst on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Quoting Trump, Yingst said the president promised to \u201cbeat the f***ing s*** out of them\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll be hitting them hard,\u201d Yingst reported the president saying. \u201cThey\u2019re going to get a beating.\u201d<\/p>\n

The report came a day after Iran said it attacked US forces at a military base in Jordan, the latest salvo in a five-month-long conflict.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters from the Oval Office, Trump confirmed the plan to retaliate following the attack.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey know it\u2019s coming. They\u2019re asking us not to do it, but you know they tried shooting at [us] last night,\u201d Trump said. \u201cSo it\u2019s our turn, and we\u2019ll see if we get there with an agreement at some point. But we\u2019re going to hit them very hard.\u201d<\/p>\n

The fighting threatens to again derail the latest detente, after the US paused its strikes for several days starting on Saturday, following 13 consecutive days of attacks.<\/p>\n

A ceasefire, reached last month as part of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Washington and Tehran, dissolved in early July.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it targeted an airbase and US Central Command (CENTCOM) centre in Jordan.<\/p>\n

The IRGC warned of further attacks in a statement. \u201cAs long as threats against the Islamic Republic of Iran continue and illegal and vicious actions by American forces against our interests continue, the resistance will continue,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n

CENTCOM, meanwhile, described the attack as an \u201cattempted surprise attack on US forces based in the Middle East\u201d.<\/p>\n

All the missiles were intercepted, and \u201cUS forces remain vigilant and at a high state of readiness\u201d, CENTCOM added.<\/p>\n

The attack comes after three US soldiers were killed at an airbase in Jordan on July 17.<\/p>\n

Experts have said the killings underscored Iran\u2019s ability to inflict<\/a> deadly damage on military installations where American soldiers are deployed, as US officials have warned of a diminishing supply of air defence interceptors.<\/p>\n

Despite the US\u2019s military superiority, critics have warned that Iran maintains the ability to conduct a grinding asymmetrical war. At least 18 American soldiers have been killed since the war began in February.<\/p>\n

Trump-Netanyahu meeting<\/h2>\n

The latest Iranian attacks were launched just hours after Trump met<\/a> Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Netanyahu has long been perceived as influencing Trump to take a more aggressive approach towards Iran.<\/p>\n

Despite launching the war on Iran together on February 28, the US and Israel have diverged on whether and how to continue the conflict.<\/p>\n

Israel has pushed for the continuation of the war with the aim of changing Iran\u2019s government.<\/p>\n

It has also opposed any agreement that could allow Iran to continue its nuclear programme, which Tehran for years has maintained is only for civilian purposes.<\/p>\n

The Trump administration, meanwhile, has repeatedly sought ceasefires that would allow it to frame the conflict as a strategic victory. Trump himself has alternated between calls for diplomacy and threats of escalation throughout the war.<\/p>\n

In April, he infamously pledged that a \u201cwhole civilisation will die tonight\u201d, just hours before announcing an agreement to pause the fighting.<\/p>\n

More recently, Trump has floated seizing Iran\u2019s Kharg Island, an important port for Iranian oil products, but that\u00a0prospect would all but assure US troops on the ground.<\/p>\n

He also threatened to strike Iran\u2019s Pickaxe Mountain nuclear site as well as civilian infrastructure, including bridges and power plants. International law experts and human rights groups<\/a> have said such attacks would constitute war crimes.<\/p>\n

Was unpopular in US<\/h2>\n

Public opinion polls have shown low US support for the war. Even members of Trump\u2019s Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement have questioned whether any benefits outweigh the costs, including rising fuel prices\u00a0precipitated by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Netanyahu, who faces elections in October, described his meeting with Trump as \u201cexcellent\u201d.<\/p>\n

The face-to-face was expected to be politically advantageous for the Israeli leader, who portrays himself to voters as uniquely able to manage Israel\u2019s keystone relationship with the US.<\/p>\n

The Israeli prime minister said the conversation was full of \u201cpartnership, mutual support and a shared understanding of our common goal to ensure Iran never acquires nuclear weapons, along with other objectives\u201d.<\/p>\n

The White House offered a more staid response, with a spokesperson saying in a post on the social media platform X that the meeting was \u201cpositive and productive\u201d.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Netanyahu also met with US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who has long framed his staunch support for Israel through his evangelical Christian faith.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn an important meeting with the US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth,\u201d Netanyahu posted on X, alongside a photo of the pair.<\/p>\n

The Pentagon did not immediately release its account of the meeting.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
