Ajinkya Rahane, one of Indian cricket\u2019s most understated performers and the architect of one of its greatest overseas triumphs, called time on his international career on Thursday (July 30, 2026), bringing the curtains down on a prolonged journey defined more by resilience than fanfare.<\/p>\n

The 38-year-old announced his retirement from international cricket and all formats through a video posted on social media. His final appearance in India colours came in the second Test against the West Indies in Port of Spain in July 2023.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have always relied on timing in my batting, and I have always understood its importance. Today, I feel the timing is right for me to move on and announce my retirement from international cricket and all formats,\u201d Rahane said.<\/p>\n

Few Indian cricketers had to wait as long for recognition despite producing consistently at the domestic level. Having risen through Mumbai\u2019s formidable cricketing structure, Rahane made his international debut in 2011 and went on to become one of India\u2019s most dependable batters overseas.<\/p>\n

His compact technique, calm temperament and ability to thrive in demanding conditions made him a fixture in India\u2019s middle order during one of the team\u2019s most successful Test eras.<\/p>\n

Rahane played 85 Tests, scoring 5,077 runs at an average of 38.46 with 12 centuries. He also represented India in 90 One-Day Internationals and 20 T20 Internationals, amassing 2,962 and 375 runs, respectively.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery single day, every innings, every opportunity I got to bat, the dream was always to wear the India cap. I lived by one simple rule: always put my country and my team ahead of myself,\u201d Rahane said.<\/p>\n

If there is one chapter that will forever define his legacy, it is the remarkable tour of Australia in 2020-21. With regular captain Virat Kohli returning home after India\u2019s humiliating 36 all out in Adelaide, Rahane inherited a battered side and led it with quiet authority.<\/p>\n

His century at the Melbourne Cricket Ground set the tone for India\u2019s revival before an injury-ravaged squad scripted a memorable 2-1 series victory, capped by the famous triumph at the Gabba. In six Tests as captain, Rahane remained unbeaten, winning four and drawing two.<\/p>\n

Ironically, captaincy remained one of the most underutilised facets of his international career. Despite repeatedly demonstrating tactical clarity and an ability to bring the best out of his teammates, leadership opportunities remained limited before and after the Australia triumph.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile my chapter as an Indian cricketer comes to an end, my journey with the game doesn\u2019t. I look forward to helping the next generation, sharing the values the sport has taught me, and giving back to the game that has given me everything,\u201d Rahane said.<\/p>\n

His international returns tapered off over the next two years, but Rahane continued to remain a force in domestic cricket. He captained Mumbai to its 42nd Ranji Trophy title in the 2023-24 season, reaffirming his enduring value to the domestic giant\u2019s cricketing ecosystem. He also continued to enjoy the confidence of IPL franchises, leading Kolkata Knight Riders over the last two seasons after earlier leadership stints with Rajasthan Royals and Rising Pune Supergiants.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
