I have always relied on timing in my batting, and I’ve always understood its importance. Today, I feel that it is right for me to move on, and announce my retirement from international cricket, and all formats,” Rahane said in a video posted on Instagram.

There are careers remembered for their weight of numbers, and others for the moments that altered history. Rahane’s belonged firmly to the latter.

He may never have possessed the magnetic aura of some of his celebrated contemporaries, nor sought the spotlight that inevitably found them. Yet few Indian batters of his generation were as dependable in foreign conditions. His compact technique, quiet temperament and appetite for difficult assignments made him an indispensable figure in India’s rise as a formidable travelling Test side.

His defining chapter arrived in Australia during the winter of 2020-21.

With Virat Kohli returning home after India’s crushing defeat in Adelaide and the team battered by injuries, Rahane inherited the captaincy amid uncertainty. What followed became one of the country’s most cherished cricketing stories. His serene, unbeaten century at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the Boxing Day Test steadied a shaken dressing room, and India went on to script a remarkable 2-1 series victory, culminating in the unforgettable triumph at the Gabba.

It remains one of the finest examples of leadership exercised not through rhetoric but through composure.

“From those early days, travelling from Dombivli as a young boy, just to practice, I gave this game everything I had. Every single day, every innings, every opportunity I got to bat. The dream was always to wear the India cap,” Rahane said.

Rahane’s ascent began in Mumbai cricket, where he announced himself by scoring more than 1,000 runs in only his second Ranji Trophy season. After making his Test debut in 2013, he quickly established his credentials overseas, first with a resilient innings in Durban and then with his maiden Test century in Wellington in 2014.

Later that year came another landmark. His elegant 103 at Lord’s helped India secure its first Test victory at the Home of Cricket in 28 years, an innings that combined technical assurance with uncommon resolve.

The years that followed saw centuries in Melbourne, Colombo and Delhi, and numerous vital contributions away from home, often on demanding surfaces where patience mattered as much as strokeplay.

His international journey was not without interruptions. Dropped from the Test side in 2022 after a prolonged dip in form, he forced his way back through weight of domestic runs and a resurgent IPL season. Recalled for the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia, he emerged as India’s leading run-scorer in an otherwise disappointing campaign.

His final appearance for India came in the second Test against West Indies at Port of Spain in July 2023.

Though regarded principally as a classical Test batter, Rahane proved equally adaptable in the shortest format. He enjoyed productive IPL seasons, captained Mumbai to the 2022-23 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title and reinvented himself memorably with Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2023, where a blistering 61 off 27 balls reminded observers of an attacking range often hidden beneath his measured exterior.

Reflecting on his journey, Rahane said his relationship with the game would continue beyond retirement.

“While my chapter as an Indian cricketer comes to an end, my journey with the game doesn’t. I look forward to helping the next generation, sharing the values this sport has taught me and giving back to the game that has given me everything.”

His farewell carried the same humility that defined his career.

“’Ajinkium’ means unbeatable. But cricket has shown me defeat many times. As cricketers, we fail more often than we succeed. My team has lost matches. I have made mistakes, but there is one place where I was never defeated. And that was… in your heart. Thank you for your love, your faith, and your support. Cap number 278, signing off.”

Rahane’s legacy lies not merely in the runs he scored, but in the quiet authority with which he led, the courage with which he batted, and the dignity with which he leaves the international stage.

Published on Jul 30, 2026

Source link

Ajinkya Rahane, one of India’s finest overseas batters and the understated architect of one of its greatest Test triumphs, announced his retirement from international cricket on Thursday, drawing the curtain on a career that was built less on spectacle than on substance.
