href=\"https:\/\/www.emjreviews.com\/diabetes\/news\/first-drug-to-delay-onset-of-type-1-diabetes-to-be-rolled-out-on-nhs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Type 1 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, according to a\u00a0cross-sectional\u00a0study.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Researchers evaluated 147 premenopausal women with\u00a0Type 1 diabetes\u00a0(T1D), including 30 with\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emjreviews.com\/reproductive-health\/news\/women-with-pmos-should-get-annual-review-of-symptoms-says-nice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(PMOS)\u00a0and 117 without the condition.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lipoprotein and inflammatory glycoprotein profiles were characterised using proton nuclear magnetic resonance\u00a0(proton NMR)\u00a0spectroscopy.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0researchers\u00a0also compared women with both\u00a0T1D\u00a0and\u00a0PMOS\u00a0with 293 women who had\u00a0PMOS\u00a0without\u00a0T1D, including 249 with normal glucose tolerance and 44 with abnormal glucose tolerance.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After adjustment for age and age at diabetes diagnosis, no significant differences were\u00a0identified\u00a0in lipoprotein or glycoprotein variables between women with\u00a0T1D\u00a0with or without\u00a0PMOS.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">An initial\u00a0increase in very\u00a0low-density\u00a0lipoprotein\u00a0(VLDL)\u00a0cholesterol lost significance after adjustment for confounding factors.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Distinct Lipoprotein Patterns Emerged<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Clear differences\u00a0emerged\u00a0when women with both conditions were compared with women who had\u00a0PMOS\u00a0alone.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Women with abnormal glucose tolerance and\u00a0PMOS\u00a0showed higher concentrations of\u00a0VLDL\u00a0cholesterol,\u00a0VLDL\u00a0triglycerides, and\u00a0VLDL\u00a0particle numbers, alongside lower high-density lipoprotein\u00a0(HDL)\u00a0cholesterol concentrations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">By contrast, women\u00a0with\u00a0T1D\u00a0and\u00a0PMOS\u00a0had higher concentrations of\u00a0low-density\u00a0lipoprotein\u00a0(LDL)\u00a0cholesterol and\u00a0HDL\u00a0cholesterol, increased total and medium\u00a0HDL\u00a0particle numbers, and larger\u00a0LDL\u00a0particles.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, they also showed the highest levels of small\u00a0HDL\u00a0particles and the smallest average\u00a0HDL\u00a0particle size among the groups studied.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Inflammatory Markers Highlight Cardiometabolic Differences<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Inflammatory glycoproteins were significantly elevated in women with\u00a0T1D\u00a0and\u00a0PMOS\u00a0and in those with abnormal glucose tolerance and\u00a0PMOS, compared with women with\u00a0PMOS\u00a0and normal glucose tolerance.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The study also\u00a0identified\u00a0strong correlations between inflammatory glycoproteins and\u00a0VLDL-related measures in specific sub-groups, suggesting links between inflammation and lipid metabolism.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Overall, the findings\u00a0indicated\u00a0that coexisting\u00a0PMOS\u00a0did not worsen circulating lipoprotein or inflammatory glycoprotein profiles in women with\u00a0T1D.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nevertheless, the presence of potentially harmful\u00a0HDL\u00a0sub-classes may\u00a0warrant\u00a0further investigation.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0researchers\u00a0concluded that prospective studies are needed to clarify the\u00a0long-term\u00a0cardiovascular implications of hyperandrogenism and\u00a0PMOS\u00a0in women with\u00a0T1D.<\/span><span
