However, doctors caution that the reality is far more complex. A recent case involving a young gym trainer demonstrates that lung cancer can affect even physically active individuals with no obvious risk factors, reinforcing the importance of recognising symptoms early and seeking timely medical attention.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"2\"\/>The patient, a fitness professional known for his disciplined lifestyle and commitment to health, had never imagined he could face a diagnosis of lung cancer. When a persistent cough and other symptoms failed to improve, he underwent further medical evaluation. Detailed investigations confirmed the diagnosis, turning what initially seemed like a minor health concern into a life-changing moment.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"4\"\/>Following a comprehensive assessment by a multidisciplinary cancer team, he underwent treatment tailored to his condition. <!-- -->Today, he has returned to his active lifestyle and continues regular follow-up care, using his own experience to encourage others not to ignore persistent symptoms or delay seeking medical advice.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"9\"\/>His journey challenges one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding lung cancer, that only smokers are at risk. While tobacco remains the leading cause, doctors point out that lung cancer can also occur due to genetic predisposition, environmental pollutants, occupational exposure, passive smoking and other factors.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"12\"\/>Speaking on the occasion of World Lung Cancer Day, <span class=\"em\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">Dr Jitesh Rajpurohit, Thoracic Surgical Oncologist, SSO Cancer Hospital<\/span> said, &#8220;One of the biggest myths we continue to face is that lung cancer only affects smokers. While smoking remains the single largest risk factor, we are increasingly seeing patients with little or no smoking history. Persistent cough lasting more than three weeks, unexplained weight loss, chest pain, breathlessness, coughing up blood or recurrent chest infections should never be ignored, regardless of a person&#8217;s age or fitness level.<!-- --> The encouraging reality is that advances in early diagnosis, minimally invasive thoracic surgery, targeted therapy and immunotherapy have significantly improved outcomes for many patients. Early detection continues to be the single most important factor in improving survival.&#8221;<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"19\"\/>Doctors also emphasise that maintaining a healthy lifestyle remains important, but it should never create a false sense of immunity from disease. <!-- -->Awareness, timely evaluation of symptoms and access to specialist care remain equally essential.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"23\"\/>This patient&#8217;s story serves as a reminder that cancer does not always fit stereotypes. Sometimes, the healthiest-looking individuals can face unexpected diagnoses.
