After all, what does snoring have to do with anaesthesia? But according to Dr Sulaiman Ladhani, Consultant Pulmonology, <a rel=\"noamphtml noopener\" class=\"keywordtourl\" href=\"https:\/\/www.financialexpress.com\/market\/wockhardt-ltd-share-price\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wockhardt<\/a> Hospitals, <a rel=\"noamphtml noopener\" class=\"keywordtourl\" href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/section\/cities\/mumbai\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mumbai<\/a> Central, \u201cWhile occasional snoring can be harmless, frequent or loud snoring may be an early sign of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a condition that can increase the risk of breathing problems during and after surgery.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyloading\" data-lazy-type=\"lazyloading-image\" src=\"https:\/\/data.indianexpress.com\/election2019\/track_1x1.jpg\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/data.indianexpress.com\/election2019\/track_1x1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1px\" height=\"1px\" style=\"display:none;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"bg-highlight-yellow\">DISCLAIMER: This article is based on information from the public domain and\/or the experts we spoke to. Always consult your health practitioner before starting any routine.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall container-wall-exclusive\">\n<h2>Why do anesthesiologists ask about snoring?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cSnoring doesn\u2019t have to be harmless since in certain individuals it may be a sign of a narrowed or partially blocked airway while asleep, leading to the possibility of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA),\u201d explains Dr Ladhani.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuch people are more prone to experiencing breathing interruptions, having lower oxygen levels at night, and being at a greater risk of difficult airway management and breathing-related complications both during and after anaesthesia,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n<p>This is why the anaesthesia team routinely asks about snoring; it helps identify patients who may require extra precautions <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/lifestyle\/health\/why-patients-strictly-advised-fast-not-eat-before-surgery-risks-experts-10282184\/\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">before, during, and after surgery.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Can loud snoring indicate undiagnosed sleep apnea?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cLoud and habitual snoring, particularly when it is associated with choking during sleep, episodes of stopped breathing, or excessive drowsiness during the day, is a common indication of OSA,\u201d says Dr Ladhani.<\/p>\n<div class=\"adboxtop adsizes\">\n<p>Story continues below this ad<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>General anesthesia and certain pain medications relax the muscles that normally help keep the airway open. In people with undiagnosed OSA, this can make airway obstruction more likely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile under general anesthesia and with the use of pain medications, the muscles which keep the airway open relax even more, thus raising the chance of airway obstruction and breathing difficulties,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing this beforehand allows the anesthesia team to tailor the anesthetic plan, choose appropriate pain management strategies and monitor <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/lifestyle\/health\/walking-epidurals-ease-labour-pain-benefits-adoption-risks-usage-india-experts-10800047\/\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the patient more closely during recovery.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" style=\"background: #FFF;border: 0;border-radius: 3px;margin: 1px;max-width: 540px;min-width: 326px;padding: 0;width: calc(100% - 2px)\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DbYcq91Ewfa\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\">\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Can snoring be a reason to avoid general anesthesia?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cSurgery is seldom put off simply because of snoring; the decision is based on the patient\u2019s total risk level, the severity of their symptoms, and how urgent the operation is,\u201d says Dr Ladhani.<\/p>\n<p>However, if the surgery allows, doctors may sometimes opt for regional anesthesia instead of general anesthesia.<\/p>\n<div class=\"adboxtop adsizes\">\n<p>Story continues below this ad<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIn certain cases, regional anesthesia might be chosen instead of general anesthesia if it is clinically suitable. The decision, however, depends on the kind of surgery and the patient\u2019s condition,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n<p>For patients with diagnosed or suspected sleep apnea, anesthesiologists may also:<\/p>\n<p>* Modify the anesthetic technique.<br \/>* Minimise the use of sedatives and opioid painkillers where possible.<br \/>* Monitor oxygen levels more closely after surgery.<br \/>* Advise patients already using CPAP therapy to continue it around the time of surgery.<\/p>\n<h2>Should you mention snoring before surgery even if you\u2019ve never been tested?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cEven though it might appear to be a small matter, regular snoring should be reported as part of the pre-anesthesia assessment,\u201d says Dr Ladhani.<\/p>\n<div class=\"adboxtop adsizes\">\n<p>Story continues below this ad<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Doctors often use simple screening tools such as the STOP-BANG questionnaire to estimate a person\u2019s risk of obstructive sleep apnea. \u201cWhen the screening indicates a high risk of OSA and the surgery is elective, the medical team may suggest additional evaluation, such as a sleep study, if this is likely to affect the way patients are managed during surgery,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"bg-highlight-yellow\">DISCLAIMER:\u00a0<i>This article is based on information from the public domain and\/or the experts we spoke to.
