The tenth edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League gets underway on Tuesday, August 4. Here\u2019s a look at how the league took shape, its legacy in the decade gone by, and what you need to know ahead of this milestone edition.<\/p>\n

Starting in 2016, a time people in Chennai would ideally like to forget because of Chennai Super Kings\u2019 two-season ban in the Indian Premier League, the TNPL emerged as a state league eager to unearth local talent, provide a foundation for promising players to hone and showcase their skills and take a step closer to the national team while cashing in on the incredible burst to the state cricket scene the IPL had given.<\/p>\n

The results are there for all to see.<\/p>\n

Not only has the TNPL emerged as a credible feeder for the IPL, with the likes of Sai Sudharsan, Varun Chakaravarthy, T Natarajan, Washington Sundar, Sai Kishore and Shah Rukh Khan coming through that assembly line, it has also provided the national side with Varun, Natarajan, Washington and Sai Sudharsan now part of the senior team setup.<\/p>\n

For all the heights it scaled, the TNPL has also had its fair share of controversies. The league found itself in muddy waters in 2019 when allegations of online betting and match fixing involving some players surfaced. That controversy blew up, cost a few owners their space in the ecosystem and triggered some wholesale team rebranding.<\/p>\n

The TNPL was launched in 2016, hoping to replicate what the now defunct Karnataka Premier League (the predecessor of Karnataka State Cricket Association\u2019s Maharaja Trophy) meant for the local ecosystem there. Now, the TNPL has quietly become the blueprint to emulate.<\/p>\n

The league also saw a significant international presence right from the start: Matthew Hayden served as the brand ambassador in its initial years, the late Dean Jones brought his exuberance into commentary, while Jonty Rhodes, Muttiah Muralitharan, and Lance Klusener all lent their time in mentorship and coaching roles.<\/p>\n

For the uninitiated, here\u2019s a look at the league\u2019s structure. The tournament remains an eight-team affair, but plenty of changes have come about in names and bases since.<\/p>\n

The eight teams in this edition are: Chepauk Super Gillies, Dindigul Dragons, Madurai Panthers, Kovai Kings, Tiruppur Tamizhans, Nellai Royal Kings, Salem Spartans, Trichy Grand Cholas<\/p>\n

The Chepauk Super Gillies is the most successful franchise, having won the title four times.<\/p>\n

The knockout format, too, was revised from the second season. In the inaugural edition, all eight teams faced each other once and the top four teams qualified for the semifinal. From the second season, while the group stage format remained the same, the two semifinals gave way to an IPL-style qualifier-eliminator system.<\/p>\n

Another significant change is in the player selection system. A highly contentious draft system, which heavily favoured teams with the biggest budgets, made way for the IPL-style auction model only in 2023.<\/p>\n

Under the old model, the team that paid the highest franchise fee was automatically handed the first opportunity to pick the best players from the pool of talent. In the first four seasons, the erstwhile Tuti Patriots (now Salem Spartans) and the Chepauk Super Gillies received the first two picks, and the two teams went on to win three of the first four titles.<\/p>\n

So, evidently, it\u2019s been quite the rollercoaster ride, and we\u2019re all set to go again when defending champion Tiruppur Tamizhans take on Dindigul Dragons in the season opener.
