EXCLUSIVE: Kalki Koechlin reveals her SURVIVAL kit on the sets of Bhay – happy music, podcasts & puzzles to “shake it out”; admits that OTT OVERLOAD exists: “There’s too much content… no one knows what to watch”You are known to take on complex and unconventional characters. What was it about Bhay – The Gaurav Tiwari Mystery that made you say yes?
I think what really attracted me to the role of Bhay – The Gaurav Tiwari Mystery was the fact that Gaurav Tiwari is a person who has lived a unique and mysterious life. There is still a lot of debate about how he passed away. So, it makes it all the more real and I love that about it.
How has the feedback been for Bhay – The Gaurav Tiwari Mystery?
I am so glad Bhay has received great reviews. I have been reading them and the audience has appreciated it as they have been following Gaurav Tiwari already for many years. Therefore, to have a series centred on him is even more exciting for them. I am really happy that they appreciated my performance. It has been quite a tough one to essay and I am happy to take on the appreciation!
You play a dark and complex role in Bhay – The Gaurav Tiwari Mystery. How was the experience prepping for it?
Preparing for roles that are dark is not comfortable. You have to take care of your body and your mental health. When you are on set for 12 hours and you are shooting for content which is dark, it’s important to do something else, even for just 15 minutes, like listening to some happy music or a happy podcast to shake it out of the routine. Even in between takes, sometimes we would just play games. Me and the other IPS (Indian Paranormal Society) members would play crosswords and puzzles and different games to distract ourselves from the intensity of it.
How important is a show like Bhay – The Gaurav Tiwari Mystery in your filmography and in your quest for evolution as an actor?
I think as an actor, you know evolution is natural. Once you get older, the way you look changes, the way you sound changes and the way you move your body also changes. This role is that of a slightly more mature woman. She has been through a lot and she has lost someone dear to her. She is also hiding many secrets and I guess we all go through such a phrase in our lives. Also, we keep things to ourselves and don’t share it with others. So, that made my role relatable in that regard.
In a recent interview, you said that there is too much content and no one knows what to watch. As an actor how does that impact your choices of the roles you choose?
There really is a lot of content and it’s really hard to decide what to watch and I think the best we can do is take our time to wait for good shows, take our time to produce good shows. Things that take time usually have a certain quality to them and I try to look out for that.
What next?
I actually have an international project, a first for me. It’s called Her Song. Its executive produced by James Ivory, the man himself and therefore, it’s super, super exciting. We hope that it will be released in cinemas sometime next year. And I have another series happening which I can’t yet talk about.
