The initiative has been undertaken in partnership between Police Department and SPIC, Thoothukudi.
A total of 9 vehicles, including 8 vehicles belonging to the armed reserve police and one city highway patrol vehicle, have been upgraded with a newly installed CCTV camera system.
The 8 armed reserved vehicles, which are deployed for prisoner escort duties, court duties and security related assignments have been equipped with CCTV cameras featuring inbuilt memory storage and night vision video recording capability.
Similarly, Thoothukudi city highway patrol vehicle has been fitted with three CCTV cameras, including Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera, a varifocal lens camera capable of precise zooming along with a monitor installed inside the patrol vehicle for real-time surveillance.
Through these, video recording during prisoner escort and other official duties carried out by the armed reserve vehicle will be ensured. Similarly, the CCTV cameras installed in highway patrol vehicles will help in preventing criminal incidents during major festivals and in crowded public places, as well as enable real time monitoring of suspicious individuals, officials said.
Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police Albert John, Assistant Superintendent of Police C. Madhan and other officials were present.
