Gaurav Gera on being appreciated for playing an unrecognizable character in Dhurandhar, “I feel blessed that I was considered for this role”Gaurav, after years in the entertainment industry, you are getting your dues for your performance as juice centre owner in Pakistan in Dhurandhar?
Yes! Finally! It’s been quite a while being in the industry, it’s been 25 years. Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi was 22 years ago, it was in 2003. And the character of Mohammad Aalam, I feel blessed that I got to play a role where I couldn’t be recognized. I feel blessed that I was considered for this role. And humbled, loving it.

How did you get this part?
I was considered by casting director Mukesh Chhabra. He had called me for the audition. And we had done it twice. And after that, director Aditya Dhar was shown my audition. And I am sure he liked it. And Mukesh ji suggested I grow a beard. I told him that my beard grows almost fully white. He said that will be taken care of. And yeah, he considered me, hats off. I also feel that, to suggest, for Mukesh Chhabra to even suggest my name. Considering the body of work that I have…I mostly keep doing funny stuff. To see me like that, in that serious sinister role, I feel that it is a big achievement for him.

And for you?
And for me it is a proud moment that he considered me. About sadly being, unrecognisable in the role. I love being in disguises where I am not recognized. I love it. I have done many such things. Where I may not be recognised. And I am glad because the film is successful. And is loved so much. That people are searching for my identity on the internet… who is that guy who plays Mohammad Aalam? And all the actors. All the departments. From makeup to the sets to casting to music. Aditya Dhar’s vision. I think everything has come together so beautifully.

You have been a master of impersonation for 25 years, especially your female impersonations
I love get-ups. I think everyone knows this for a long time. Now, maybe more people know. I feel it’s one life. I want to experience life as all things possible. I want to play all age groups possible. All genders possible. I enjoy it. I think it’s one life. I want to see life from all points of view.

What next?
As of now, I am looking forward to Dhurandhar 2. Yes, I am in it. Yes, I am underused. Of course, I am underused. I have saved myself for Dhurandhar, so that no one recognises me. To be a spy. No I am kidding. Thankfully, Dhurandhar hopefully will open doors for me. It will give me more to choose from. I used to choose before. But now I think I will be able to choose better things. Earlier I used to choose from less options.
