India gears up for 2026 SUV rush as facelifts, new-gen models and comebacks line up

SUV surge: SUVs continue to dominate the Indian market, pushing aside hatchbacks, sedans and MPVs. Buyers prefer the space, ground clearance and practicality these vehicles offer. Manufacturers are responding with a full slate of launches lined up through 2026. The year is set to bring new models, major facelifts and additional engine choices across key price segments.

Mahindra XUV7XO: Mahindra will update its flagship SUV, now renamed XUV7XO, with a revised fascia and an all-new cabin that introduces a triple-screen dashboard. Features such as panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting and boss mode are expected. The SUV will retain its 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines, with AWD likely to continue. Bookings have already opened ahead of launch.

New-gen Seltos: Kia’s next-generation Seltos will launch on January 2, 2026. Built on the new K3 platform, it grows in length, width and wheelbase and gets a redesigned interior with dual displays and upgraded features. Despite the overhaul, it will continue with existing petrol and diesel engines and multiple transmission options. Prices will be announced at launch, with a wider variant mix expected.

Tata petrol duo: Tata Motors will introduce turbo-petrol versions of the Harrier and Safari. The 1.5-litre engine has already made its debut elsewhere and will now expand the portfolio for these SUVs. Both models have been showcased and driven by the media, with launches expected soon. A new Accomplished Ultra trim will sit at the top, adding more convenience and comfort technology.

Duster and Tekton: Renault will reintroduce the Duster in January 2026, followed shortly by Nissan’s Tekton, its alliance twin. Both will offer distinct styling, new interiors and multiple powertrain choices, including the 1.3-litre turbo-petrol and other options. Hybrid and AWD configurations are planned later. The Duster aims for an upmarket positioning, while the Tekton is expected to echo several global Nissan design cues.

Facelift pair: Skoda’s Kushaq and Volkswagen’s Taigun will receive mid-cycle updates in 2026. The SUVs will get revised bumpers, lighting changes and a significantly richer equipment list. New features include panoramic sunroof, ADAS and 360-degree cameras. Engines will largely remain unchanged, though an 8-speed automatic may replace the current 6-speed unit on select variants, improving efficiency and drivability.

Mahindra updates: Mahindra is also preparing a facelift for the Scorpio N. Exterior revisions will be subtle, but the cabin is expected to see upgrades to materials, layout and features. Separately, the company is advancing the development of the Vision S, a sub-four-metre SUV that has undergone extensive testing. It may introduce independent rear suspension and could revive a recognisable brand name.

Tata and Maruti plans: Tata will refresh the Punch with exterior redesigns and interior enhancements. The model has been repeatedly tested and is central to Tata’s volume strategy. Maruti Suzuki, meanwhile, is readying a facelift for the Brezza. Test mules indicate incremental styling changes, added features and a CNG configuration using an under-floor tank to preserve usable boot space.

Off-road focus: Mahindra is working on another update for the Thar, adding styling cues inspired by the Roxx, including a new grille, LED lighting and larger alloy wheels. MG’s Majestor, unveiled earlier, is now expected to launch in 2026. Positioned above the Gloster, it will feature a new design interior package and triple locking differentials aimed at improving traction and off-road performance.

More arrivals: Hyundai is developing a new SUV positioned below the Venue and aimed directly at the Maruti Fronx. It may use a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine. Honda is preparing a facelift for the Elevate with refreshed styling and upgraded features. With these additions, alongside multiple returning nameplates and facelifts, the midsize SUV segment will see intense competition through 2026.
