Synergy of old and young, T20 WC preparations — Bracewell reveals New Zealand’s plans before ODI series

New Zealand’s squad for the three-match ODI series in India is a blend of Indian Premier League (IPL) regulars and international rookies. Unsurprisingly, captain Michael Bracewell is banking on the experience of the former to help the newcomers cope with the pressure of playing in front of packed Indian crowds.

“We’re used to playing in front of much smaller crowds in New Zealand, particularly in domestic cricket,” Bracewell said on the eve of the series opener at the Baroda Cricket Association Stadium.

“So, to come here and play in front of a sold-out crowd is a little bit different for a few guys in the group.”

Bracewell said the team has discussed what to expect when taking the field in India. “We’ve spoken about that as a group — what to expect when you walk out onto the field and things like that,” he said.

“Guys who have been here before have been really helpful. Devon (Conway) has played a lot of cricket over here and has been keen to share his experiences, whether from international cricket or the IPL.

“Glenn Phillips is another one who has played a lot of cricket (in India). We’re really leaning on those guys who have plenty of international experience and, importantly, experience in Indian conditions.”

The New Zealand captain confirmed that tall fast bowler Kristian Clarke will make his international debut in Sunday’s opener.

Bracewell also acknowledged that the team’s extended stay in India would be valuable preparation ahead of next month’s Men’s T20 World Cup.

“It’s a huge benefit to be here this far out from the World Cup,” he said. “That said, our focus right now is very much on this ODI series, and we want to make a big impact straightaway. I guess the fortunate thing is that we get to spend a bit more time in these conditions and slowly hone our skills before the World Cup.”
