Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO (Auto and Farm Sector) at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., said the company has “learnt to straddle across segments to give appropriate value proposition for each,” adding that the company has built “a 6000-people team in 3 years” since beginning its EV SUV journey.
He said the company is “not over-obsessed with cannibalisation” between its 5- and 7-seater EVs and highlighted the response to the BE 6 Batman Edition, noting that “we sold out 999 units… in minutes.”
He added that Mahindra is holding “intense conversations on whether we should look at launching more.” Jejurikar said the 9S “will redefine the segment” and is expected to have strong appeal in markets such as Punjab, Haryana and Delhi.
He also said Mahindra aims to ramp up annual operating capacity to 1,00,000 units by March 2026, and that in Q2, EVs accounted for 8.7% of the company’s sales compared with the industry average of 5%.
Design and dimensionsThe SUV shares its silhouette with the XEV 9e but features a closed-off grille, connected DRLs, triangular LED headlamps, a long bonnet and an upright rear with smoked tail-lamps. It sits on a 2,762 mm wheelbase with 219 mm of ground clearance and a height of 1,745 mm. Boot capacity is 527 litres with the third row folded, and the frunk can store 150 litres.
Inside, the XEV 9S adopts a triple-screen layout spanning its dashboard, along with two additional displays for second-row passengers. All variants include sliding and reclining second-row seats, an openable panoramic sunroof and BYOD connectivity.
Higher trims add an augmented-reality head-up display, Harman Kardon audio, Boss mode seat control, ambient lighting, ADAS, auto parking and a drowsiness detector.
Mahindra offers 59 kWh, 70 kWh and 79 kWh battery options with ranges of 521 km, 600 km and 679 km (ARAI). Fast charging up to 175 kW is supported. The SUV uses motors producing either 228 bhp or 282 bhp, both with 380 Nm of torque.
Acceleration from 0–100 kph is rated at 7.7 seconds for the 59 kWh model and 7 seconds for the higher-powered versions, with a top speed of 202 kph.
R Velusamy, President – Automotive Business, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. and Managing Director, Mahindra Electric Automobile Ltd., said the SUV “creates space – more than anyone else and gives a smooth and noise-free ride,” adding that the MAIA system “enables many of its high tech features.”
Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO, Automotive Division, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. and Executive Director, Mahindra Electric Automobile Ltd., said the company is “not just playing in the EV segment, we’re expanding it,” calling the XEV 9S the start of “a BIG new electric era for Mahindra.”
