Maruti Suzuki eVitara first drive review: A born-EV that feels familiar, but finally future-ready
Under the skin, the eVitara packs two Lithium-Ion Phosphate (LFP) battery choices — 49 kWh and 61 kWh — paired with a 174-kW motor delivering 193 Nm of torque and a WLTP-certified range of just over 340 kilometers.
Design: Clean, Honest, and Refreshingly Non-PretentiousOut in natural light, this is the chunkiest Vitara ever, but not one pretending to be something else. No fake vents, no pseudo-SUV aggression — just a straightforward crossover stance with:
- Slim LED DRLs
- Squared-off wheel arches
- Large 19-inch wheels (likely to shrink for the Indian version)
The proportions are pleasing without being overbearing. Everything looks purposeful — a welcome departure from over-styled EVs currently flooding the market.Interior: Premium Feel, Maruti Sensibility
Step inside and you’re greeted by what can only be described as “premium-but-practical Maruti.” Materials are better than anything seen on a Maruti yet, and the layered two-tone cabin elevates the ambience.
Key interior highlights:
- 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen
- Digital instrumentation (slightly offset but well integrated)
- Soft-touch elements on the dash
- Squared-off steering wheel that feels modern without being gimmicky
- Ambient lighting with 12 colours — confirmed for India
Front-seat space is generous with a commanding driving position. The sunroof, however, is restricted to the front row.Rear Seat: Roomy Enough, But Mind the Headroom
Despite compact exterior proportions, the rear cabin feels airy thanks to:
- A wide window line
- Lower EV-specific floor (no knees-up posture)
- Split 40:20:40 seats for added practicality
- Three adjustable headrests
- ISOFIX mounts
Two adults and a child will be most comfortable. Taller passengers may brush the roof over bad roads, especially in India.
Boot Space: Adequate, Not Class-Leading
The trunk isn’t cavernous. One large suitcase fits comfortably, but charging cables stored under the floor limit usable space further. If boot room is a priority, competitors may fare better.
Early Verdict: A Mature EV from a Brand Known for Playing Safe
The Maruti Suzuki eVitara feels thoughtfully executed — not flashy, not experimental, but practical and premium in a way that Indian families will appreciate. Its clean design, roomy cabin, born-EV fundamentals and quality interiors signal a major step up for India’s largest automaker.
If Maruti can price it aggressively — as it often does — the eVitara may well become India’s most accessible “proper” EV yet.
