The experience centres in Mumbai and Delhi remain focused on showcasing the Model Y and helping walk-in visitors understand Tesla’s products. The Gurugram outlet marks a shift toward a more functional market setup, signalling the company’s move from introductory spaces to a structured retail network.
Tesla formally entered India this year, making the country its 50th global market. The company introduced two imported Model Y variants priced at Rs 59.89 lakh and Rs 67.89 lakh, both shipped from the Shanghai plant and subject to a 70% import duty, making them nearly 30% costlier than in the US.According to FADA data based on Vahan registrations, Tesla sold 104 units in September and October, with the Model Y continuing to lead interest in the luxury EV segment.
The India launch comes as Tesla faces softer results elsewhere. Global sales rose 7% year-on-year in the September quarter to 497,100 units, while China sales declined to 26,006 units in October, the lowest in three years due to rising competition and lower demand. These trends have led investors to take a more cautious view.
Tesla’s operations in India are now led by Sharad Agarwal, who took charge in November. Agarwal previously headed Lamborghini India, held senior sales roles at Audi India, and served as chief business officer at Classic Legends. His appointment reflects Tesla’s aim to strengthen its brand and retail footprint in the premium EV market.
The company enters a segment dominated by Mercedes-Benz and BMW, which together account for nearly 80% of India’s luxury EV market, with 460–480 units sold in October. Tesla’s rivals include the BMW iX1, Mercedes EQA, Volvo EC40, Kia EV6 and BYD Sealion 7.
