Toyota enters India’s EV race with Urban Cruiser Ebella: 61 kWh battery, 543 km range and Level 2 ADAS


Toyota India has unveiled the Urban Cruiser Ebella EV, marking its first electric vehicle launch in the country. The Urban Cruiser Ebella is a badge-engineered version of the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara and is based on the same platform, batteries, and core features.

Toyota first showcased the Urban Cruiser EV concept at the 2025 Auto Expo. With this launch, Toyota’s India portfolio now includes petrol, diesel, hybrid, and electric models.

Toyota has offered two LFP battery options. The smaller pack is 49 kWh, and the larger pack is 61 kWh. Toyota lists the 49 kWh version at 144 hp, while another specification sheet cites 171.6 hp for the same variant. The 61 kWh version is rated at 174 hp. Both versions produce 189 Nm of torque. The larger battery claims an ARAI range of up to 543 km on a single charge.

Charging times have been specified. With a 7 kW AC charger, the 49 kWh battery takes about 6.5 hours from 10–100%, and the 61 kWh battery takes about 9 hours. With an 11 kW AC charger, the times reduce to 4.5 hours and 5.5 hours, respectively. DC fast charging takes about 45 minutes from 10–80% for both batteries.

Toyota has said the Urban Cruiser Ebella will be offered in 2WD and AWD configurations, while the India-spec model is described as front-wheel drive only. Toyota is also offering a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) rental programme, an eight-year battery warranty, and more than 500 EV-enabled service touchpoints.

On design, the Urban Cruiser Ebella closely resembles the e Vitara but carries distinct Toyota styling. It gets segmented LED DRLs, triangular LED headlights linked by a thick black trim, and a smoother front bumper with two vertical air vents at the edges.

The SUV sits on 18-inch aero-optimised alloy wheels and has generous body cladding. Rear door handles are integrated into the C-pillar. The segmented LED taillights are not connected by a light bar.

Dimensions measure 4,285 mm in length, about 1,800 mm in width, and around 1,640 mm in height. The wheelbase is 2,700 mm, which Toyota says is segment-leading until the arrival of the electric Tata Sierra, which is expected to have a 30 mm longer wheelbase.

Toyota is offering nine colour combinations. Five are monotone: Café White, Bluish Black, Gaming Grey, Sportin Red, and Enticing Silver. Four are dual-tone with a black roof: Café White, Land Breeze Green, Sportin Red, and Enticing Silver.

Inside, the cabin layout mirrors the Maruti e Vitara. The EV gets a 10.1-inch digital driver display and a 10.25-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Other features include ventilated front seats, 12-colour ambient lighting, a JBL sound system, panoramic or fixed glass roof, wireless charger, dial-type gear selector, ride-by-wire, multiple drive modes, PM2.5 cabin filter, and a 10-way electrically adjustable driver seat. Rear seats are sliding and reclining.

Safety equipment is standard across variants. The Urban Cruiser Ebella comes with seven airbags and disc brakes on all four wheels. The top variant includes Level 2 ADAS with lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and front and rear blind-spot alerts.

Toyota has revealed the Urban Cruiser Ebella but has not announced prices or delivery timelines yet. The new Toyota EV will compete in the mid-size SUV segment and will go up against the likes of the Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra BE 6, VinFast VF6 and VF7, Tata Curvv EV, MG ZS EV, MG Windsor EV, and the Maruti e Vitara.
