Alternate option to reduce traffic congestion

The state highway 178 which runs between Thoothukudi-Tiruchendur has been swamped by vehicles due to the increasing pilgrimage trips, regardless of the season. Extending this four lane road to six lanes may encounter land acquisition issues.

Options to alleviate congestion is to study the feasibility of constructing a railway line from harbour to Arumuganeri. Additionally, a ferry service from the old harbour to Tiruchender could attract tourists and reduce travel time. Constructing a bridge from harbour road junction to Mullakadu would also help ease heavy traffic in this stretch. The authorities involved must study the feasibility to address the issue.

Encroached paths

The paths meant for passengers at the Periyar Bus Stand in Tirunelveli junction are mostly occupied by shops selling tea and snacks. These items are displayed on the pathway protruding from the shops, using make-shift arrangements. Even chairs have been arranged, like that of a hotel. This causes inconvenience to the people waiting for their buses. The concerned authorities must periodically visit the bus stand, look into the issue and slap spot fines on the defaulters, to prevent these kinds of encroachments in future.

Request for direct train service

At present there are no direct trains from Kanniyakumari and Thiruvanathapuram to Thanjavur. Only a train from Tiruchendur through Tirunelveli is the option. Other option is people from southern most places must reach Tiruchi and then to Thanjavur. The railway authorities must take necessary action to formulate direct trains from Thriruvannathapuram or Kanniyakumari to Thanjavur for an easier journey.

Pollution woes

Burning of roadside waste by the sanitary workers is a common sight in Palayamkottai. Though these conservancy workers deserve appreciation for collecting household waste from door-to-door, they merely set fire to the roadside wastes. It is said that they do this when the vehicle carrying garbage becomes full. Notably these workers are not waiting for the second trip of the lorry to collect more waste. The concerned authorities must look into the issue and prevent this menace of burning wastes that are plastic objects, which is a great health hazard to road users.
