: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has completed the work on the pedestrian plaza on Khader Nawaz Khan Road and the facility is likely to be inaugurated in the first week of February.

Following a meeting, the civic agency has started talks with the traffic police to create additional parking spaces as more vehicles are expected after the inauguration of the pedestrian plaza.

A resident posted on X: “Chennai KNK Khader Nawaz Khan road looks beautiful with proper pedestrian tracks, lighting, and the road surface. This is how urban streets should be. A very good try by the Chennai Corporation.”

Pointing to traffic issues, a few residents have urged the civic agency to regulate parking and one way traffic.

“After reducing Khader Nawaz Khan Road to half its width, we are awaiting the setting up of no parking zones and one-way traffic on the road. Right now it’s a complete mess. Someone needs to step in,” a resident said.

Following a recent meeting by the GCC with the traffic police, the officials have started to explore the feasibility of creating additional parking spaces along the streets in the vicinity. The on-street parking space is estimated to accommodate 20 cars and 40 motorcycles.

“We are exploring the feasibility of creating on-street parking lots along Wallace Garden First Street, Second Street, Rutland Gate Fourth Street, Fifth Street, and Sixth Street. We are planning to create parking spaces for over 50 cars on Rutland Gate Second Street,” said an official.

One-way traffic

GCC and the Traffic Police are planning to permit one way traffic from Model School Road to Nungambakkam High Road. Entry from Nungambakkam High Road to Khader Nawaz Khan Road will be restricted.
