The screening of the much-loved Jhankaar Beats (2003) was held on February 6 as part of the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival. After the screening, director Sujoy Ghosh and actors Sanjay Suri and Shayan Munshi went down memory lane and spoke about the film and their memories. The session was moderated by Rangita Pritish Nandy, who was the producer of Jhankaar Beats and she, too, shared her experiences. Some of the anecdotes brought the house down.

KGAF 2026: Sanjay Suri recalls Jhankaar Beats WILD premiere night: “Sujoy Ghosh climbed a wall; fell into a slush and got ELECTROCUTED”; Shayan Munshi reveals, “I was made to wear a saree possibly as a prank for audition; I thought they were making Ramayana or Mahabharata”Sanjay Suri said, “We had a premiere of Jhankaar Beats. We were all tense, wondering ‘Logon ko humour samajh aayega ki nahi aayega’ (smiles). The date was June 19 and it was pouring that day in Mumbai. Sujoy then used to live near the Rajesh Khanna Garden. He returned from the premiere and after walking the red carpet. He saw that the gate of his building was shut. He was unable to enter. Hence, he climbed the wall, and he fell into a slush. This is what happened to him on his premiere night (laughs).”

After the session, Sujoy Ghosh exclusively told Bollywood Hungama, “That day, I also got electrocuted.”

Meanwhile, Shayan Munshi revealed, “I was called to the PNC (Pritish Nandy Communications) office to meet the team. Obviously, I was super excited. Then, I was introduced to Sujoy Ghosh. I had no idea why I was called in. No movie was discussed. Suddenly, I find myself being draped in a saree. I presumed they were making serious period drama like Mahabharat or Ramayana. I couldn’t wrap my hand around it. Sujoy Ghosh was taking my audition. I still don’t know if it was a prank!”

He added, “I was given some lines which I performed with the costume and it had no relevance to what was coming next. Later, Jhankaar Beats was talked about and I still don’t know why I was made to do that to get this role!”

Towards the end of the session, Sanjay Suri revealed, “Whether or not we meet frequently, we became buddies for life. Rangita called me after years and asked me to come for this session. I asked no question and confirmed my presence.”

He shared a lovely trivia, “I was making My Brother Nikhil (2005). There was a scene of the swimming competition. I had to swim and the actor playing the competitor was giving a rehearsed performance. I knew Shayan Munshi was a national award-winning swimmer. I called him and said, ‘I am in trouble. Can you come for this one scene in the film? There’s no money’. He replied, ‘Just book the ticket. I am coming’. That’s it. Sujoy played the coach in that film.”

Rangita Pritish Nandy joked, “They ask me for money. When they work with each other, nobody asks for money!”

Sanjay Suri replied, “See, if the platform is paying you, then you need to pay us! If you are doing it for charity, then we’ll do it (for free).”
