Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 releases on JioHotstar: How a well-made comic caper got crushed in cinemas due to multiplex snub, bad release timing, Dhurandhar wave; novel re-release plan derailed at the last minute 2 : Bollywood News

The Kapil Sharma-starrer Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 dropped on JioHotstar on Friday, February 6. The comic caper had an unfortunate run at the box office, suffering from bad timing and also due to a raw deal from the multiplexes.

Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 releases on JioHotstar: How a well-made comic caper got crushed in cinemas due to multiplex snub, bad release timing, Dhurandhar wave; novel re-release plan derailed at the last minuteKis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 released in cinemas on December 12, a week after Dhurandhar. It had a poor first week, where it collected Rs. 9.77 crores. In Week 2, it accumulated a mere Rs. 1.35 crore. On its third Friday, December 26, it was observed that its shows had been discontinued across the country. This left a section of trade and industry shocked because, in certain cinemas, the comic caper was attracting an audience. However, producer Ratan Jain chose to take the unprecedented decision as ‘its theatrical run was impacted by limited screen availability due to ongoing multiplex takeovers by other releases’, as per the official communication.

Ratan Jain then announced that Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 will be re-released on January 9. The new trailer was unveiled on January 5. However, on January 8, the makers decided to cancel the release as they were not able to secure the required number of screens. Bollywood Hungama was the first one to break the news.

A source told us then, “Star Studio18, the studio partner and distributor of Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2, had assured of releasing the film in 500 screens in its second run. But they were able to secure only around 200-250 screens. Also, most of the shows were at odd times. Venus, the producers of Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2, were not satisfied with such a release. As a result, a decision was taken on the evening of Thursday, January 8, to not re-release the film at all.”

With no other option left, the makers waited for 8 weeks to lapse since its theatrical release. Once that was done, they released Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 on OTT. There was a time in Bollywood when viewers used to be treated with several comedies at regular intervals. Now, barely a handful of comic capers arrive and most of them fail to tickle the audience’s funny bone. But Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 was an exception. The jokes landed well, due to which the theatres erupted with laughter. Hence, to see a film of this sort getting affected by external factors is plain disheartening.

There’s no doubt that the makers made a blunder by releasing Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 a week after Dhurandhar. But a benefit of the doubt can be given to them. This is because though Dhurandhar looked promising, no one expected it to become an all-time record grosser of Bollywood. Moreover, such grossers set the box office on fire from the first day itself. But Dhurandhar was a rare film which became a sensation only in week 2. And it’s in the second week of that film when Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 arrived in cinemas.

Tere Ishk Mein, which released a week before Dhurandhar, collected Rs. 24.16 crores in the week when the Ranveer Singh-starrer hit cinemas. But in its third week, its collections slipped down to just Rs. 5.75 crores. This is because the Dhurandhar wave gathered momentum only in the second week. Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 also got affected by this gigantic wave. And if that’s not enough, Avatar: Fire And Ash was released on December 19. Hence, Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 got sandwiched between the two biggies.

In hindsight, it is clear that releasing a small film amid so many biggies should have been avoided, especially since December is traditionally dominated by large-scale releases. This trend is expected to continue, and the last month of 2026 itself will see three major films vying for screens – the Ajay Devgn–Tamannaah Bhatia–Sanjay Dutt untitled film, Avengers: Doomsday and the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer King. What’s bewildering is that while December 2025 was packed to the brim with big-ticket releases, February and March 2026 remain largely vacant, except for a handful of releases.

Ideally, Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 should have arrived on February 20, February 27 or even March 4, capitalizing on the Holi period. While a section of the audience may have stayed away due to Ramzan, a film with such strong word of mouth would certainly not have wrapped up below Rs. 12 crores, the way it unfortunately did, owing to its December release.

But what needs to be noted is that the incorrect release timing is not the only reason to blame. As per sources, Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 was not given prominent shows in several multiplexes. In many theatres, shows were reduced on weekdays. An industry insider commented, “While it’s understandable that the craze for Dhurandhar was unprecedented and its shows had to be increased, the multiplexes should have realized that Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 was enjoying a great word of mouth and that it was a rare comedy which was actually funny. If a balance was achieved, that is, increasing Dhurandhar’s showcasing while also ensuring that Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 gets to thrive, it probably might have done better at the ticket window.”

The insider also remarked, “Multiplexes may argue that they had no choice but to drastically reduce Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2’s shows. However, a top multiplex chain is able to provide prime time shows to small-time Hollywood films simply because they distribute them. Even when these English films have barely found an audience, they get shows, sometimes in the second week as well. Hence, if they wanted, they could have helped Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2, but there was no will.”

Many in the trade are of the belief that discontinuing the film and trying to bring it back in cinemas after 2 weeks was also a bad idea. The insider said, “Ratan Jain was simply trying to find a novel way to ensure the film gets its due in cinemas, as he knew that the film was special. Sadly, his efforts proved futile. Nevertheless, let’s hope everyone takes a lesson from this episode – makers should keep their ears on their ground and should have no qualms in pushing a film if a holdover release is doing well and they shouldn’t release small or mid-sized films in December, which is usually dominated by biggies. As for the multiplexes, here’s hoping they, too, understand that they should not shy away from giving that extra push to deserving films.”
