Mahashivratri is one of the most sacred Hindu festival, which is dedicated to worship Lord Shiva. Mahashivratri 2026 Do’s

1. Prepare mentally and physically

Before starting the fast you need to take a sankalp, prepare your mind, body and soul for the fast. Engage yourself in spiritual activities such as meditation, yoga and maintain positivity around you. Reduce your food intake so that you can prepare yourself physically.

2. Choose the type of fast

Before starting the fast, you need to choose the type of the fast you want to observe. There are three types of fast observances: Nirjala Fast, Phalahar Fast and Partial Fast.

3. Stay hydrated

You are advised to stay hydrated whole day so that yo don’t feel low during the fast and proper water intake will maintain your energy level.

4. Maintain celibacy

You are suggested to maintain the purity during the fast time.

5. Offer prayers and mantras

This day is considered as the most auspicious day to worship Lord Shiva so one must offer special prayers to Lord Shiva and chant various sattvik mantras to appease Mahadev. Panchakshari Mantra and Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra are the two main powerful mantras that can be chanted to seek blessings of Lord Shiva.

6. Visit Temple

This day is auspicious to visit Shiva temple. People are advised to visit the temple and perform Rudrabhishekam to Shivalingam.

7. Break the fast during parana time

You need to check the panchang and check parana time as this time is auspicious for breaking the fast.

Maha Shivratri: Don’ts

1. Don’t do heavy physical activities

While observing fast, you should not get involved in heavy physical activities as this can lead to discomfort. You should perform spiritual activities.

2. Avoid negative thoughts

Mahashivratri is the ideal time to enhance the positivity so you must avoid negative thoughts and acts so that you can become more spiritually aligned

3. Stay away from tamasik activities

You are advised to stay away from alcohol, avoid gambling and abstain from non vegetarian food and onion and garlic.

4. Don’t sleep during the night

Devotees are advised to encourage to stay awake during the night time, meditate, and chant mantras.

5. Control negative emotions

You should control your negative thoughts such as anger, greed, jealousy, and ego should be kept in check.
