Xiaomi’s electric SUV tops China sales, surpasses Tesla’s Model Y in January


Xiaomi’s electric vehicle business had managed to unseat Tesla in China.According to data from the China Passenger Car Association, the Xiaomi YU7 SUV sold 37,869 units last month, which was twice as many as Tesla’s 16,845 Model Y cars, making it the top-selling SUV in China.

In January, the Model Y, which had been the top-selling model in December, fell to 20th place. During that time, it also dropped from the top spot to seventh among new energy vehicles.

Approximately six months earlier, in the summer of 2025, Xiaomi began selling the YU7, its second electric vehicle model.

Sales numbers for a given month can fluctuate. The Xiaomi vehicle did not rank first, even though the YU7 did outsell the Model Y in October. Sales for Tesla have been steadily upward thus far.

With gasoline-powered vehicles excluded, Xiaomi came in at number ten and Tesla at number five in China’s sales last year. With more than 3 million cars sold in 2025, BYD dominated the Chinese auto industry, followed by Geely with 2.6 million.
