Passenger vehicle dispatches hit record 4.5 lakh units in January, up 12.6%: SIAM


Domestic passenger vehicle dispatches in India rose to 4.50 lakh units in January 2026, up 12.6% from 3.99 lakh units in January 2025, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). Dispatches refer to wholesale supplies from manufacturers to dealers.For April 2025–January 2026, total domestic passenger vehicle sales stood at 37.07 lakh units, a 6.2% increase from 34.91 lakh units in the same period a year earlier.

Passenger vehicles
Passenger vehicle production, domestic sales and exports increased in the April–January period. Production rose to 44.25 lakh units from 40.83 lakh units, up 8.4% year-on-year. Domestic sales grew 6.2% to 37.07 lakh units from 34.91 lakh units. Exports increased 17.6% to 7.48 lakh units from 6.36 lakh units.Within the segment, utility vehicles recorded the highest growth. Domestic utility vehicle sales rose 8.4% to 24.53 lakh units from 22.62 lakh units in April–January, while passenger car sales increased 1.8% to 11.24 lakh units from 11.04 lakh units and van sales rose 3.9% to 1.30 lakh units from 1.25 lakh units.

In January 2026 alone, passenger vehicle production stood at 4.58 lakh units, up 5.6% year-on-year, while exports rose 33.4% to 0.77 lakh units from 0.58 lakh units.

Rajesh Menon, Director General at SIAM, said, “Passenger Vehicles, Two-Wheelers and Three-Wheelers posted their highest ever Sales of January in 2026, with double-digit growth, compared to January 2025. 4.50 Lakh units of Passenger Vehicles were sold in January 2026, with a growth of 12.6%, as compared to January 2025.”

Three-wheelers

Three-wheeler dispatches to dealers rose 30.2% year-on-year to 0.76 lakh units in January 2026, from 0.58 lakh units a year earlier.For April–January, domestic three-wheeler sales increased 10.4% to 6.85 lakh units from 6.21 lakh units, while production rose 22.3% to 10.76 lakh units from 8.80 lakh units. Exports grew 52.2% to 3.84 lakh units from 2.52 lakh units.

Two-wheelers

Two-wheeler dispatches rose 26.2% year-on-year to 19.26 lakh units in January 2026, compared with 15.26 lakh units in January 2025.

During April–January, domestic two-wheeler sales increased 7.8% to 1.79 crore units from 1.66 crore units, while production rose 9.6% to 2.2 crore units from 2.01 crore units. Exports climbed 23.7% to 42.59 lakh units from 34.42 lakh units.

Scooters recorded the strongest growth within the segment, with domestic sales up 15.2% in the April–January period.

Menon said, “Three-Wheelers witnessed a strong growth of 30.2% compared to January of previous year, with sales of 0.76 Lakh units, while Two-Wheelers grew by 26.2% in January 2026 as compared to January 2025, with sales of 19.26 Lakh units.”

Overall industry

Total vehicle production across passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers and quadricycles stood at 29.27 lakh units in January 2026, up 15.0% from 25.47 lakh units a year earlier.

For April–January, total domestic vehicle sales across segments rose 7.6% to 2.23 crore units from 2.07 crore units, while exports increased 24.4% to 53.96 lakh units from 43.36 lakh units.
