Do not make these 4 mistakes while buying AC, otherwise the electricity bill will increase.

Buying a new air conditioner has become an important part of summer preparation these days. However, many people make such mistakes in a hurry, due to which not only the cooling is not provided properly, but the electricity bill also starts skyrocketing. With rising electricity prices in India and new BEE standards (2026 update), it has become even more important to choose an energy efficient AC.

Taking a wrong decision can result in thousands of rupees being spent annually. If you run the AC for 6-8 hours a day, a 5-star inverter model saves a lot in the long run. By purchasing an AC with low star rating or wrong capacity, initial savings are achieved, but later the burden of electricity bill and maintenance increases. If you purchase with correct information, you will get better cooling and the bill will remain under control. Come, let us look at 4 such mistakes, by keeping which you will be able to get a better deal, so that you do not have to regret later.

1. Buying AC just by looking at ton (capacity)

The biggest mistake people make is that they choose AC only after seeing 1 ton, 1.5 ton or 2 ton. Tons are important depending on the size of the room, but the cooling capacity (in watts) and insulation of the room, sunlight, ceiling height etc. are ignored. If the AC is too small then the computer keeps running continuously and more electricity is consumed. At the same time, a very big AC wastes energy by turning on and off again and again. In such a situation, choose the right tone AC. 1 ton for 100-120 sq ft, 1.5 ton for 120-180 sq ft and 2 ton for larger rooms.

2. Ignoring star ratings

Many people buy an AC with 3-star or less rating because of the initial low price. After the new rules of BEE in 2026, star rating has become more strict. 5-Star AC consumes less power. If you run the AC daily, the difference from 3-star to 5-star is completely recovered in 2-3 years. 3-star seems cheap, but can double the electricity bill in the long run. Always check ISEER value and choose only 5-star inverter.

3. Ignoring ACs with inverter technology

Non-inverter ACs are cheap, but the computer switches on and off frequently, which consumes more electricity and the cooling remains uneven. Inverter adjusts AC speed, provides fast cooling and runs quietly. This also saves electricity up to 30-50%. Inverter is best for long term use in summer. You will regret in future by choosing non-inverter.

4. Giving less importance to brand, service and features

It is also wrong to buy AC just by looking at the price or brand name. Make sure to check the availability of service center with good brand, warranty (up to 10 years on compressor), auto-clean, Cooper condenser and anti-bacterial features. Due to poor service, AC gets damaged quickly and consumes more electricity. Also, if the installation is not correct, the bill also increases. If you avoid these 4 mistakes, your new AC will not only keep the room cool but will also keep the electricity bill under control.
