Only distilled water or demineralized water should be poured into the inverter battery. Tap water, RO water or rain water can damage the battery. With proper maintenance the battery can last 4-5 years.

In summers, when the lights are cut, most people depend on the inverter, but if the battery has to run properly then it is very important to add water to it. Most people think that they should add tap water, RO water or rain water, but this is wrong. Only distilled water or demineralized water should be poured into the inverter battery. This water is absolutely pure, it does not contain any minerals, salt, dirt or ions.

Why is only distilled water good? Inverter batteries are lead-acid, which contain a mixture of sulfuric acid and water. This mixture produces electricity by chemical reaction. If you pour tap water, it contains things like calcium, magnesium, chlorine. These get deposited on the plates of the battery, the plates get damaged, the charging of the battery becomes weak and the backup starts ending quickly.

Some minerals remain in RO water too, especially if TDS is high then it causes harm. Rain water is even dirtier, it is mixed with dust and soil.

Why distilled water is best? This water is made by making steam and then cooling it, hence it remains 100% pure. There is no effect on the chemical reaction of the battery. This increases the life of the battery and it can easily last for 4-5 years if maintained properly. Demineralized water is almost the same, it also does not contain minerals, so that will also work.

When and how to water? Check every 2-3 months. There are minimum and maximum lines on the battery (or green-red marks). If the water level is below the minimum then water should be added. Switch off the inverter, remove the plug, open the cap (use a funnel for easy pouring), slowly pour distilled water, up to the green mark or slightly below the maximum. Do not pour too much, otherwise it may overflow. Then close the cap properly.

Where to get distilled water? It is easily available in battery shop, auto parts shop or online. A 5 liter jar costs Rs 50-100.

Can you make it at home also? Yes, for this, water will have to be boiled, then the steam will have to be cooled and collected, but the market one is easier.

What if you add tap water by mistake? The battery should be serviced quickly, remove water and add distilled water, but if it is too late, it may cause damage. So remember – only distilled water should be poured into the inverter battery. This will make the battery last longer, provide better backup and also save money. With a little care one can remain tension free for years.
