The company says that scammers have become very clever now. They do not do wrong things immediately after creating an account, but gradually build trust. Therefore these new features will give warning in advance.
How will Facebook get security?
You will now get an alert when a suspicious friend request is received on Facebook. If a request is coming from an account that has very few mutual friends or the location appears to be from a different country, a warning will appear on the screen. This will give you a chance to think whether to accept it or block it. This feature is currently in testing and will be available to all users gradually. This will reduce fraud caused by fake profiles, for example, if an unknown person pretends to be a friend and asks for money, you will get an alert message even before accepting the request.
Device linking warning in WhatsApp
According to the report of Tech Crunch, there are many scams on WhatsApp. Scammers call you or send you messages saying “You have won the talent competition” or “Verify your account” and then make you scan a QR code or enter your phone number on a fake website. This links your account to their device and they can read your messages or commit fraud in your name. Now WhatsApp will protect you with the new warning system. If a linking request appears suspicious (as evidenced by behavior), an alert will appear saying “This request is suspicious, may be a scam”. This will make users stop beforehand and take the next step only after thinking carefully.
Advanced Scam Detection on Messenger
Advanced scam detection is now rolling out in Messenger in more countries. If a scam pattern is seen in a chat with a new contact, such as a fake job offer, investment scheme or asking for money, an alert will appear. Messenger will ask a message – “Do you want to share recent messages with AI for review?” If you say yes, then AI will look at the chat and tell whether it is a scam or not. If a scam is detected, the company will provide information about common scams and advise to block/report. This feature is being rolled out in more countries in March 2026.
Why were 1.09 crore accounts closed?
Meta said that last year they removed more than 159 million scam ads, 92% of which were caught before any reports were made. Also closed 1.09 crore accounts on Facebook and Instagram which were linked to criminal scam centers. The company is also using AI to detect fake celebrity profiles, brand impersonation and deceptive links. They work by analyzing text, images and context.
Why is it important for users?
These features will be very useful in India, where WhatsApp is used the most. Lakhs of people become victims of fraud every day. With this step, now the app itself will warn first, so prevention will become easier. You will get an alert in advance that any suspicious message may be coming, so you will have time to report it immediately. Also, people will be saved from clicking on unknown links or QR codes. Meta says these tools are meant to keep users safe and they are also working with police and industry partners to take action against scammers.
