The old lights are now dying out. From 2012 to 2022, High Pressure Sodium Vapor (HPSV) lights in Delhi were converted to LED lights. But now these LEDs have also completed their life. Therefore MCD has made a plan to install a new smart system.
ILMS is the new system
The name of the new technology is Intelligent Lighting Management System i.e. ILMS. It has special sensors which monitor everything in real time. The biggest thing is adaptive dimming i.e. the ability to change its brightness. If no person, vehicle or animal is passing on the road, the brightness of the light automatically reduces.
If no one comes for a long time, the lights may switch off completely. As soon as someone comes, the sensor detects him and the light starts flashing again. This prevents wastage of electricity. When the roads are empty at night, there is no need to keep the lights on at full brightness throughout the night. This technology is saving Rs 5 crore annually.
You will get alert in case of damage
ILMS also has remote monitoring. If any light gets damaged, the system immediately sends an alert. Officials can find out sitting at home and fix the complaint even before it comes.
First people had to complain, then they had to wait. Now this process will become much faster. Security will also increase because no path will be left in the dark. This work will be done in the 10 year plan. In the first three years, all the lights of these six zones will be upgraded.
The contract of the old agency is ending in May 2026, after which the new agency will come. Later, there will be a survey to replace 80 thousand old lights in unauthorized colonies also. 25 percent of the lights will be changed every six months.
Helpful in reducing AQI
This smart system will not only save money. Delhi’s air will be cleaner because less power plants will run due to less power consumption. Maintenance will be easier and roads will be safer at night.
MCD officials say, ‘With ILMS technology, the brightness of the lights increases or decreases automatically and complaints of faults are resolved immediately.’
This step of Delhi Government and MCD proves that small smart technologies can make a big difference. By installing this system on 3 lakh 12 thousand lights, not only will there be a saving of Rs 5 crore, but the city will also become more bright, safe and environment-friendly.
Looking at this plan, it would not be wrong to say that in the coming days, the roads of Delhi will be illuminated with smart lights and every penny of electricity will be spent at the right place.
